EVelution Energy has strengthened the commercial foundation of its planned US$850 million cobalt processing facility in Yuma County, Arizona, after signing a binding offtake agreement with Mitsui & Co. The five-year agreement provides a long-term customer commitment for cobalt metal production from the proposed facility. Under the agreement, EVelution plans to supply Mitsui with a substantial majority of the facility’s cobalt metal output, with deliveries of up to 3,000 metric tonnes of contained cobalt per year.
Commercial Agreement Supports U.S. Cobalt Processing Development
The Mitsui agreement provides a commercial structure for a planned cobalt processing operation designed to address a gap in U.S. domestic cobalt infrastructure.
Cobalt supply chains require more than mineral availability. Processing, refining, product qualification, logistics and long-term customer arrangements are critical components of establishing a commercial operation. The involvement of a major industrial buyer provides a customer commitment that can support project development discussions with lenders and public-sector stakeholders.
Arizona Facility Targets Domestic Cobalt Capacity
EVelution’s planned facility is intended to become the first commercial-scale cobalt metal and cobalt sulfate processing facility in the United States.
The company has stated that more than 75% of global refined cobalt production comes from China, while the United States currently lacks commercial-scale domestic cobalt processing infrastructure. The project is positioned as a supply-chain development initiative aimed at establishing domestic cobalt processing capability rather than solely as a commodity-processing facility.
Execution Remains Key Development Challenge
While the Mitsui offtake provides commercial support, further project milestones remain necessary before the facility can begin operations. EVelution will need to complete construction, secure consistent feedstock supplies, commission the processing plant and achieve product qualification for high-specification customers.
The long-term value of the project will depend on converting the customer agreement into operating capacity, reliable production and repeatable cobalt supply. The offtake agreement provides a key commercial component by linking the planned Arizona facility with an established industrial customer and creating a foundation for development of a U.S.-based cobalt processing supply chain.
