Almonty Begins Sangdong Tungsten Production Phase in South Korea

Almonty Industries has advanced its Sangdong tungsten mine in South Korea from development into processing operations after beginning to feed stockpiled run-of-mine ore through its newly commissioned processing plant in June 2026. The move marks the project’s transition toward the production of saleable tungsten concentrate and shifts the asset from a development-stage project toward an operating mining operation.

The company is targeting the production of tungsten concentrate from the initial processing campaign, creating near-term revenue potential from an asset that has been under development for an extended period.

Stockpiled Ore Supports Initial Plant Ramp-Up

Almonty reported that Sangdong had approximately 139,700 tonnes of stockpiled ore available for the ramp-up phase, with a blended grade of about 0.25% WO₃. The inventory includes approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore held at the end of the first quarter of 2026, followed by the addition of 19,700 tonnes of development ore during the second quarter.

During the initial operating period, Almonty is processing lower-grade material. The approach is focused on establishing stable plant performance, managing recoveries and confirming concentrate quality before progressing through the ramp-up process. The start of processing represents a key transition point for Sangdong, moving the project from development activities into operational execution.

Tungsten Supply Concerns Increase Strategic Importance

Sangdong is entering production as tungsten gains greater attention as a strategic industrial metal. The commodity is used in defence, aerospace, electronics, tooling and high-temperature industrial applications, making supply security an increasing focus for industrial consumers.

The mine’s move into processing comes amid efforts by Western markets to develop alternative sources of critical minerals and reduce exposure to concentrated supply chains. The project provides a test case for whether mining assets aligned with Western supply objectives can progress from development plans into physical concentrate production.

Operational and Commercial Milestones Ahead

The next phase of Sangdong’s development will depend on several operational and commercial factors. These include maintaining processing throughput, achieving consistent recoveries as ore feed changes, and producing concentrate that meets customer requirements. Successful concentrate shipments and sustained plant performance will determine how quickly the project moves from initial production into a stable operating phase. The transition into processing changes the basis on which Sangdong is evaluated. The project is no longer focused only on future production potential; it has begun generating tungsten concentrate from mined material.
