Growing attention on copper exploration is coinciding with increased focus on project scale, resource growth and development potential as companies advance drilling programs in Canada and Chile. Copper remains a key metal for electrification, power grid expansion and energy infrastructure. The International Energy Agency has stated that copper demand associated with grid lines more than doubles under climate-driven energy transition scenarios, while demand for several battery-related minerals increases at an even faster rate.
Recent exploration updates from Pirate Gold, Hot Chili, and Great Southern Copper illustrate different stages of copper project advancement, ranging from early discovery drilling to development-focused resource expansion.
Pirate Gold Expands Moby Dick Copper-Gold Footprint
Pirate Gold reported broad copper-gold mineralization from the Moby Dick discovery at its Treasure Island project in Newfoundland. Drill hole PGC-26-068 intersected 0.54% copper equivalent (CuEq) over 180.8 metres, including 1.48% CuEq over 49.4 metres. The company stated that the mineralization is consistent with a copper-gold porphyry to high-sulphidation epithermal system. The company reported that drilling has confirmed the Moby Dick alteration zone across approximately 3.1 kilometres in length, 850 metres in width, and 500 metres in depth.
Beyond the immediate discovery area, Pirate Gold identified potential regional-scale mineralization within the broader Crippleback area, which extends more than 32 kilometres by 8 kilometres. The company also reported more than 100 copper and gold occurrences, including 79 new copper occurrences identified around Moby Dick during a single month of prospecting activities.
La Verde Drilling Supports Costa Fuego Growth Plans
In Chile, Hot Chili announced results from drill hole DKD044 at the La Verde project, which returned 391.1 metres grading 0.51% CuEq from surface. The intercept included a higher-grade section of 85.4 metres grading 0.61% CuEq from 160 metres depth.
According to the company, mineralization encountered from surface supports the potential for La Verde to contribute a significant high-grade starter pit within the broader Costa Fuego copper-gold hub. The drilling program forms part of ongoing work to evaluate La Verde’s role within the larger Costa Fuego development strategy.
Scout Drilling Underway at Especularita Targets
Great Southern Copper has commenced scout reverse-circulation drilling at the Artemisa South copper-gold target within its Especularita project in Chile. The company also completed five scout drill holes at the Victoria target, where it reported that porphyry-style alteration strengthened toward the centre of the mineralized system.
Samples collected from Victoria have been submitted to ALS Laboratories in Santiago for analysis. In parallel, audio magnetotelluric (AMT) geophysical surveys are being conducted across the lithocap area to support future drill targeting and exploration planning at Especularita.
