Recent exploration and resource-definition programs across copper and gold projects in Canada, Chile and Mexico have delivered results tied to discovery potential, resource growth, mine planning and restart preparation, highlighting the differing roles drilling can play in advancing mining projects toward development and production decisions.
Companies including Pirate Gold, Hot Chili, Mayfair Gold, and Goldgroup Mining have reported exploration and drilling updates affecting projects ranging from early-stage discoveries to near-term production restart candidates.
Pirate Gold Expands Moby Dick Discovery Area
Pirate Gold reported results from its Moby Dick target at the Treasure Island project in Newfoundland, identifying a grassroots copper-gold porphyry to high-sulphidation epithermal-style mineralized system.
Drill hole PGC-26-068 returned 0.54% copper equivalent (CuEq) over 180.8 metres, including an interval grading 1.48% CuEq over 49.4 metres. The company stated that drilling has confirmed the Moby Dick alteration zone across approximately 3,100 metres of strike length, 850 metres of width, and 500 metres of depth. Pirate Gold also reported that the broader Crippleback area demonstrates regional-scale potential extending more than 32 kilometres by 8 kilometres. The company noted that true widths remain undetermined and that only a limited portion of the alteration system has been drill tested to date.
La Verde Results Support Costa Fuego Development Planning
At Hot Chili’s La Verde project in Chile, drill hole DKD044 intersected 391.1 metres grading 0.51% CuEq from surface, including several higher-grade intervals. According to the company, the drilling supports the potential for La Verde to contribute a high-grade starter pit within the broader Costa Fuego copper-gold hub.
The latest results form part of ongoing work aimed at expanding and refining the resource base while evaluating future mine sequencing opportunities within the Costa Fuego development strategy.
Grade-Control Program Validates Fenn-Gib Reserve Model
Mayfair Gold reported results from a grade-control drilling program at its Fenn-Gib gold project, where approximately 1.0 million tonnes of probable reserves were tested. The drilling campaign covered roughly 25% of the Phase 1 reserve inventory through a closely spaced grade-control program designed to compare reserve estimates with drilling outcomes.
Mayfair stated that the reserve model was validated within the tested area, reporting a comparable grade at a 0.8 g/t gold cut-off grade and approximately 2% more contained gold than predicted by the reserve model. Within material grading above 3.0 g/t gold, the company reported 28% more tonnes at a 7% higher grade than estimated in the reserve model.
Goldgroup Targets San Francisco Restart
Goldgroup Mining has initiated a 24,000-metre diamond drilling program at the fully permitted San Francisco gold project in Sonora, Mexico.
The drilling campaign is intended to optimize the project’s resource model and mine plan in advance of a targeted production restart scheduled for late 2026 or early 2027. The San Francisco operation includes two open pits, heap-leach processing facilities, and existing site infrastructure. The current drilling program is focused on refining mine planning and resource definition as part of restart preparations.
