Great Southern Copper has started a drilling campaign at its Victoria porphyry target in Chile as part of work on the Especularita Project. The company said the program is focused on the southern margin of the La Colorada lithocap, where geological, geochemical and spectral data point to potential for a significant porphyry copper system. The initial drilling plan comprises four reverse circulation (RC) holes.
The RC program is intended to test for both high-grade vein-style mineralisation and broader disseminated copper mineralisation identified at surface. Results from the campaign are expected to inform understanding of the scale, grade and continuity of mineralisation below historical artisanal workings. The drilling is also aimed at supporting evaluation of wider porphyry potential in the area.
Surface sampling highlights copper, gold and silver at Victoria
Prior to the drilling start, Great Southern Copper reported exploration results from surface sampling at Victoria. Rock chip assays collected from the target returned grades of up to 6.9% copper, 1.85 grams per tonne gold and 84.8 grams per tonne silver. The company linked these results to areas associated with historical small-scale mining activity.
According to the company, copper and gold extraction occurred in those areas before modern exploration techniques were applied. The current drill program is designed to test beneath the old workings to assess whether high-grade mineralisation continues at depth. It will also evaluate whether any mineralisation is connected to a larger porphyry system.
Artemisa North drilling supports La Colorada lithocap model
The Victoria campaign follows recent progress at the nearby Artemisa North target. Great Southern Copper reported that a recently completed five-hole reverse circulation drilling program confirmed evidence of a strong porphyry-style copper alteration system. The company said these findings add support to its interpretation of the broader La Colorada lithocap.
The interpretation is that the lithocap may host multiple mineralised centres. Exploration focus is currently described as being on the western and southern margins of the lithocap, where geological indicators resemble those associated with major copper porphyry deposits worldwide. Management stated that each successful drill program contributes to evidence for a potentially significant district-scale copper system.
Victoria sits along regional trend with major Andean copper deposits
The Victoria target is located within a region described by the company as one of the world’s premier copper-producing areas. It lies along a regional geological trend that hosts major South American copper deposits including Los Pelambres, Altar and El Pachón. The company said this corridor has produced some of the largest copper discoveries in the Andes.
Great Southern Copper also highlighted that Victoria benefits from a relatively low-elevation setting compared with many Andean exploration projects at extreme altitudes. Garrett said drilling at Piedras Blancas and Artemisa North has already been completed successfully.
