Alcoa has approved construction of a gallium recovery facility at its Wagerup alumina refinery in Western Australia, with support from the governments of Australia, Japan and the United States.
The project will extract gallium from the refinery’s existing alumina-processing stream, allowing Alcoa to use Wagerup’s established utilities, workforce, laboratories, materials-handling and residue-management infrastructure rather than developing a standalone mining operation.
Gallium recovery integrated with alumina production
Gallium occurs naturally in bauxite at low concentrations and accumulates in the Bayer-process liquor used to produce alumina. Recovery requires a selective separation process capable of producing sufficiently pure gallium while maintaining the performance of the refinery’s primary alumina circuit.
Alcoa will build and operate the facility, but has not disclosed its production capacity, capital expenditure, operating costs, construction schedule or the specific allocation of government support. The company has indicated that its management and operational involvement is not expected to have a material impact on group financial results, with government and strategic partners providing substantial support for the project.
Supply security drives project development
The Wagerup development is focused on securing gallium supply rather than establishing a large conventional commodity operation. Gallium markets are relatively small and opaque, while China dominates primary gallium production and refining. Against that market structure, long-term government procurement and government-linked offtake arrangements are more significant to the project than short-term spot-price movements.
Using existing refinery infrastructure reduces the need for new supporting facilities, although the operation must demonstrate reliable gallium recovery, product purity and integration with Wagerup’s existing process. The recovery circuit will also need to operate without reducing alumina throughput or increasing impurity levels elsewhere in the refinery. The final investment decision moves the project beyond its earlier memorandum and development-agreement stages. Details on production capacity and construction timing will determine the scale and timing of Wagerup’s contribution to gallium supply.
