The US Department of Defense has approved US$25 million for ReElement Technologies to purchase and install equipment at its planned commercial processing facility in Marion, Indiana.
The facility is being developed to recycle permanent magnets and process rare earths, germanium and gallium. ReElement is using a chromatographic separation technology that it says requires a smaller physical footprint and less chemical input than conventional solvent-extraction systems.
Equipment funding follows earlier Pentagon financing plan
The Department of Defense has not disclosed whether the US$25 million will be provided as a grant, loan, reimbursable agreement or another form of investment. The structure therefore remains unclear in terms of repayment requirements, government ownership rights and conditions governing equipment purchases. The allocation follows ReElement’s withdrawal from a previously proposed US$80 million Pentagon loan after the company encountered difficulties meeting federal due-diligence requirements.
The new package is more specifically linked to identifiable equipment purchases and installation than to ReElement’s broader corporate and construction requirements.
Marion facility to process multiple feedstocks
The planned Indiana operation is expected to process recycled permanent magnets while producing rare-earth materials as well as gallium and germanium products for semiconductor applications. Processing several feedstock types could increase utilisation of the facility, although the multi-material operation will require additional process control and product qualification.
ReElement has not disclosed the plant’s commercial capacity, equipment suppliers or expected commissioning date. It has also not provided production estimates for rare-earth oxides, gallium or germanium, or detailed recovery and operating-cost data based on sustained industrial production. The Defense Department funding supports equipment installation at the Marion facility but does not establish commercial production performance. Further development will require industrial campaigns demonstrating consistent throughput, specification-compliant products, independently measured recoveries and customer qualification for defence, permanent-magnet and semiconductor applications.
