Siemens and Vulcan Energy sign long-term deal for Germany’s Lionheart lithium project

Siemens and Vulcan Energy have announced a long-term industrial partnership aimed at developing the Lionheart Project, an integrated lithium and renewable energy development in Germany’s Upper Rhine Valley. The companies said the agreement supports Europe’s strategy to secure critical raw materials for the energy transition. Siemens will supply technology for the project through 2035 under the terms of the deal.

Technology scope and investment role

Under the partnership, Siemens is set to provide automation, digitalization, telecommunications, and industrial technology systems to support the Lionheart Project. The company will also take a strategic investment position in the development. Siemens Financial Services is described as providing strategic investment backing alongside the technology supply.

The companies’ stated objective is for Lionheart to become Europe’s first fully integrated platform combining sustainable lithium production with renewable energy generation. Lionheart production targets and renewable output

The Lionheart Project targets annual output of around 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate. The stated output is positioned as sufficient to supply batteries for approximately 500,000 electric vehicles per year. In addition to battery materials, the facility is expected to generate roughly 275 GWh of renewable electricity annually.

The project is also expected to produce around 560 GWh of renewable heat each year. The companies said these outputs are intended to support both industrial operations and local energy needs. Geothermal brine approach and EU raw materials policy link

Vulcan Energy plans to recover lithium from geothermal brines while producing renewable energy at the same facility. The project is described as distinct from hard-rock mining and evaporation-based extraction methods used in other approaches. This dual-output model is presented as designed to reduce carbon emissions while strengthening Europe’s domestic supply of critical battery materials.

The initiative is stated to align with objectives of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, which aims to reduce dependence on imported strategic minerals and improve industrial resilience.
