Metso Secures €40 Million Equipment Contract for Sweden’s Viscaria Copper Mine

Sweden’s Viscaria copper development in Kiruna has advanced its procurement programme through an approximately €40 million contract with Metso for processing equipment. The agreement covers several core components of the mine’s processing plant and supports the project’s stated objective of producing 120,000 tonnes of copper concentrate annually.

The contract was recorded by Metso among its Minerals orders for the third quarter. The equipment package includes crushing systems, flotation technologies, magnetic separators and concentrate filtration equipment. The agreement covers multiple stages of the processing circuit, bringing key equipment procurement into the project’s execution programme. Viscaria’s company says the consolidation of process-equipment procurement supports detailed engineering and improves predictability during project implementation.

Processing Equipment Covers Multiple Stages of Production

The contracted equipment will serve different functions within the mineral-processing flowsheet. Crushing prepares mined material for subsequent treatment, while flotation separates valuable minerals from other material. Magnetic separators provide an additional separation technology, and filtration prepares the resulting concentrate for handling and transport. The performance of these systems is interconnected. Crushing conditions affect the material entering subsequent processing stages, while separation and filtration performance influence the characteristics and handling requirements of the final concentrate.

Equipment integration will therefore be relevant to the plant’s operating performance. The project’s next implementation stages include equipment delivery, installation, commissioning and verification of the integrated processing system.

Annual Copper Concentrate Target Reaches 120,000 Tonnes

Viscaria’s stated production objective is 120,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per year. This figure refers to the total mass of concentrate rather than the quantity of contained copper or refined copper cathode.

The amount of copper ultimately recovered from the concentrate will depend on its grade, processing recovery, payable terms and downstream treatment. Transport, treatment and refining arrangements will also determine how the mine’s output reaches European industrial consumers. For buyers seeking additional copper concentrate supplies, Viscaria represents a potential source of material. The transition from mine production to refined copper availability requires commercial arrangements linking the operation with transport providers and downstream processing facilities.

Operating Performance Will Determine Processing Costs

The selected equipment will also influence the plant’s operating expenditure and saleable production. Metal losses during processing reduce recoverable output, while electricity consumption, consumables, maintenance requirements and filtration performance affect the cost of producing and shipping each tonne of concentrate.

These operating relationships must be established through project testing and demonstrated during plant operation. The delivery of the equipment package will need to be followed by installation, commissioning and assessment of whether the integrated plant can consistently achieve the intended production volume and concentrate quality.
