EU Engagement Elevates Viridis Colossus Rare Earth Project in Brazil

The Colossus Rare Earth Project in Minas Gerais, Brazil, operated by Viridis Mining and Minerals, has been positioned within European supply chain discussions following an official European Union visit led by Jozef Síkela. The visit included inspections of the company’s processing infrastructure in Brazil and discussions involving European institutional representatives.

The engagement places the project within broader European efforts to secure diversified rare earth supply chains outside China, with particular emphasis on processing capability and traceable material flows for industrial applications including electric vehicles, wind energy systems, electronics, defence technologies and advanced manufacturing.

EU Delegation Visits Brazilian Processing Facilities

The European delegation visited Viridis’s Rare Earth Research and Processing Centre in Poços de Caldas, where the company has commissioned a demonstration plant linked to material from the Colossus project.

At the facility, Viridis has produced mixed rare earth carbonate (MREC) derived from Colossus feedstock. The demonstration output represents processed material rather than raw ore, marking a step toward downstream integration in Brazil’s rare earth value chain.

The visit also included representatives connected to European financial and development institutions, including the European Investment Bank, alongside other EU institutional stakeholders operating in Brazil.

Colossus Project Positioned Within EU–Brazil Supply Chain Strategy

The Colossus project in Minas Gerais is emerging as a focal point in Brazil’s broader strategy to retain greater value from critical mineral resources through domestic processing rather than exporting raw materials.

Minas Gerais is a key mining jurisdiction in Brazil, and Colossus is being developed within a framework that aligns with European objectives to diversify supply chains and reduce reliance on concentrated rare earth processing routes. These routes remain heavily influenced by Chinese refining capacity. The project is being evaluated as part of a broader effort to establish alternative rare earth supply channels capable of supporting European industrial demand.

Demonstration Plant Produces Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate

Viridis has confirmed production of mixed rare earth carbonate (MREC) at its Brazilian demonstration facility. The output is derived from material sourced from the Colossus project and processed at the company’s local research and development infrastructure.

MREC represents an intermediate processed product within the rare earth supply chain, positioned between mined material and fully separated rare earth oxides used in downstream manufacturing applications. The demonstration plant forms part of Viridis’s broader technical validation pathway for scaling up processing capacity in Brazil.

Development Milestones and Processing Partnerships

The Colossus project has progressed through multiple development stages, including completion of a pre-feasibility study, declaration of a mineral resource estimate, and establishment of an ore reserve estimate. These milestones underpin the project’s advancement toward commercial development planning.

Viridis has also signed a non-binding letter of intent with Solvay, outlining potential offtake arrangements and technical collaboration for rare earth processing and downstream integration. The involvement of Solvay introduces chemical processing expertise into the project structure, supporting product qualification requirements and downstream industrial integration for rare earth materials.

Planned Commercial Plant and Production Targets

According to Reuters-reported development plans, Viridis is advancing a commercial processing facility for the Colossus project with estimated investment of approximately US$360mn.

The proposed plant is designed to produce around 15,000 tonnes per year of MREC and is targeted for commissioning in 2028, subject to development progress and financing conditions. This scale would transition Colossus from demonstration-level production into a commercial supply source for industrial customers and chemical processors.

Financing, Offtake, and Development Risk Factors

The project’s development pathway remains dependent on financing arrangements, offtake agreements, and continued technical validation of processing performance. The existing agreement framework with Solvay is non-binding, and further steps are required to establish firm commercial supply contracts.

Key technical considerations include recovery rates, reagent consumption, impurity control, water management, and consistency of processed output. These factors are central to determining whether demonstration-scale results can be replicated at commercial scale. Financing structures for rare earth projects outside China often require alignment between private investors, industrial partners, and public-sector institutions due to capital intensity and market structure constraints.

Strategic Role in Non-Chinese Rare Earth Supply Chains

The Colossus project is being assessed within broader efforts by Europe and Brazil to develop non-Chinese rare earth supply chains. China remains dominant in global rare earth processing and refining capacity, influencing global pricing and supply availability. Brazil’s mining sector is seeking to expand domestic value-added processing, while European stakeholders are pursuing diversified supply sources that meet industrial and regulatory requirements for traceability and environmental standards. The Colossus project is positioned within this framework as a potential source of processed rare earth material integrated into European-linked industrial supply chains.
