Belo Sun Advances Volta Grande Studies as Brazil Permitting Process Remains Key Issue

Belo Sun Mining is advancing technical work on its Volta Grande gold project in Pará, Brazil, with a new review programme aimed at updating project studies, while legal, environmental and Indigenous consultation processes continue to shape the development timeline. The company announced on 30 June 2026 that it had appointed G Mining Services to complete a Technical Gap Analysis for Volta Grande, with results expected in the third quarter of 2026. The review is intended to identify areas of Belo Sun’s 2015 technical studies that require updating and establish the scope and schedule for a future definitive feasibility study update.

Technical review to define updated feasibility work

The Technical Gap Analysis will assess the additional work required to advance the project, including field programmes, trade-off studies and third-party technical assessments. Belo Sun said the process will help determine the requirements for updating the project’s feasibility information and refining development plans.

The technical work forms part of the company’s broader effort to advance Volta Grande, although permitting and regulatory matters remain central to the project’s progress.

Court ruling restores installation licence framework

Belo Sun said a ruling issued on 13 February 2026 by the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region restored the effectiveness of the project’s Installation Licence and allowed the company to resume development activities. A subsequent conciliation process on 24 June established a framework for addressing outstanding issues related to Indigenous consultation.

Under the agreement, FUNAI has 30 business days to identify any Indigenous communities it believes should be included in complementary studies. Belo Sun will then have 30 business days to review and respond to FUNAI’s findings. During the resulting 60-day period, FUNAI agreed not to oppose the continuation of the licence, while Belo Sun agreed not to carry out construction activities.

Volta Grande development faces environmental and social scrutiny

The Volta Grande project has been subject to a prolonged legal and regulatory process. According to AP, the proposed gold operation is located along the Xingu River in Pará state, near the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam.

The legal proceedings include questions over whether environmental licensing authority should rest with federal or state agencies. AP also reported that the project has faced opposition related to Indigenous consultation requirements, potential environmental impacts and cumulative effects in a sensitive regional environment.

Project valuation depends on permitting stability

The Technical Gap Analysis could provide updated information on project design, costs and construction requirements, but the future development path remains linked to regulatory approvals and consultation processes. For Belo Sun, advancing technical studies is one component of the project’s development strategy, while establishing a stable permitting framework remains a key factor for future financing and construction decisions. The Volta Grande gold project continues to progress through technical evaluation, but legal and social approval processes remain central to its development timeline.
