The Swedish Government has approved an exploitation concession application submitted by GREENNA Mineral AB for the proposed extraction of rare earth metals at the Norra Kärr deposit in Jönköping Municipality, advancing one of Sweden’s key rare earth development projects to the next stage of the permitting process.
Before mining activities can begin, the company must complete a more detailed environmental impact assessment and obtain an environmental permit under the Swedish Environmental Code.
Project Advances Amid European Rare Earth Supply Concerns
The approval comes as Sweden and the European Union continue to rely heavily on imports of rare earth metals from countries outside the bloc, particularly China.
According to Energy and Industry Minister Ebba Busch, development of the Norra Kärr deposit has the potential to supply a significant proportion of Sweden’s and the EU’s future rare earth requirements. She said the project’s potential contribution to critical mineral supply justifies continued examination through the remaining permitting process.
Revised Development Plan Reduces Environmental Footprint
GREENNA Mineral AB modified the project after receiving comments during an earlier concession application process. Among the changes, the company plans to relocate the project’s chemical processing operations to another site considered more suitable, a revision intended to reduce both the overall environmental footprint and local impacts associated with the proposed mining development.
Government Decision Includes Environmental Protection Conditions
The exploitation concession has been granted subject to conditions designed to safeguard environmentally sensitive and strategic areas. The Government’s decision includes measures aimed at protecting Hålaveden, preserving drinking-water resources from Lake Vättern, safeguarding the Holkaberg Natura 2000 area, and ensuring that Sweden’s total defence interests are taken into account during the project’s future development and permitting stages.
