Amitsoq Graphite Project Advances With EIB Support and Greenland Permit Approval

GreenRoc’s Amitsoq graphite project in Greenland has advanced through a series of technical, regulatory, and financing-related milestones as the company moves the battery-materials development toward pre-feasibility and project financing stages.

The project has secured government approval for additional drilling, expanded downstream graphite processing work, and entered into an advisory agreement supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB). Amitsoq also holds EU strategic project status and a long-term exploitation licence issued by Greenland.

EIB advisory program targets project development and financing

GreenRoc announced that the Government of Greenland approved Phase III drilling at the Amitsoq project. The company also signed an advisory support agreement with the European Investment Bank aimed at advancing the project’s technical and financial development. The EIB-backed program will include market analysis, technical and economic reviews, business-plan preparation, financial-model development, and funding strategy work. A pre-feasibility study is scheduled to commence by the end of 2026.

The advisory initiative is designed to support progression of the project through key stages required for future financing and development planning.

Graphite processing and anode-material testing progresses

GreenRoc reported ongoing downstream testing focused on battery-material applications. A pilot plant has processed approximately 700 kilograms of 95% graphite concentrate into spherical graphite, a product used in lithium-ion battery anode manufacturing.

Additional bulk-sample testing is planned through SGS Lakefield as the company continues evaluating downstream processing pathways. The company has also commissioned laboratory facilities capable of conducting ultra-low-level impurity analysis, a requirement associated with battery-material qualification and product specification testing.

Long-term licence and production plans

Reuters reported in December 2025 that Greenland granted GreenRoc a 30-year exploitation licence for the Amitsoq project. The development is expected to produce approximately 80,000 tonnes per year of graphite concentrate from annual processing of around 400,000 tonnes of ore.

The project’s designation as a strategic project by the European Union places it among a group of critical raw materials developments considered important to regional supply-chain objectives.

Strategic graphite supply for battery manufacturing

Graphite is a key raw material used in lithium-ion battery anodes, making supply diversification a priority for battery manufacturing industries. The graphite market has been influenced by China’s dominant position across significant portions of the supply chain, while export controls and geopolitical developments have increased interest in alternative sources of supply for European industrial sectors.

Amitsoq is being developed within this broader context of efforts to establish non-Chinese sources of graphite concentrate and downstream battery materials.

Focus extends beyond mining and concentrate production

Project advancement includes not only mine development but also demonstration that graphite concentrate can be converted into battery-grade anode materials and qualified for commercial customers.

The ongoing technical work, laboratory testing, downstream processing programs, and EIB-supported development studies form part of the pathway toward establishing a financeable graphite project capable of supplying battery-material markets from Greenland.
