Savannah Advances Barroso Lithium Project with Boticas Bypass Approval

Savannah Resources has secured a positive conditional environmental decision for the planned 16.5-kilometre Boticas bypass in Portugal, removing an important infrastructure hurdle for its Barroso lithium project as it advances towards construction financing and a final investment decision.

The road is expected to cost approximately €54.4 million and connect the mine area to Portugal’s national highway network, facilitating spodumene concentrate transport to export infrastructure while reducing heavy-truck traffic through Boticas.

Road Licensing and Project Development

Savannah must complete detailed design, environmental-compliance work and the remaining RECAPE licensing process before road construction can begin. The company has indicated that mine operations could start before the bypass is completed, providing flexibility in the development schedule.

Barroso is designed to produce approximately 183,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate annually. Portugal has approved government support of up to €110 million, while Savannah has progressed with front-end engineering and long-lead procurement.

Financing and Permitting Remain Key Priorities

The company still needs to secure the full construction-funding package, obtain remaining permits and reach a final investment decision. Customer and offtake agreements remain important amid lithium price volatility and uncertainty over realised concentrate prices.

Although the bypass decision improves transport planning, local opposition and broader permitting risks remain. Savannah’s next challenge is converting its permitting progress, state support and engineering work into committed construction capital.
