Europe’s critical raw materials strategy is increasingly extending beyond major commodities such as lithium, copper, graphite and rare earths to include smaller-volume industrial metals that support electronics, defence, chemicals and advanced manufacturing.
Tin, magnesium, fluorspar and tungsten play essential roles across industrial supply chains despite their comparatively smaller markets, making secure domestic supply an important consideration for European industry.
Oropesa Tin Project Targets European Supply
Elementos’ Oropesa tin project in Spain has received “Overriding Public Interest” status from the Andalusian regional government, marking a significant milestone for the development.
According to market reporting, the project could produce approximately 3,400 tonnes of tin per year over an estimated 12-year mine life, supplying up to 10% of European tin demand. Using the London Metal Exchange (LME) cash settlement price of US$51,000 per tonne on 29 June 2026, annual production of 3,400 tonnes represents approximately US$173 million in gross contained tin value before accounting for metallurgical recovery, payability, operating costs, royalties, taxation and financing.
Tin is a critical material for solder used in electronics, printed circuit boards, vehicles, renewable energy systems and digital infrastructure, giving relatively modest production volumes strategic industrial importance.
Magnesium Project Aims to Reduce Import Dependence
Verde Magnesium’s proposed development in Romania represents another strategic metals project focused on reducing European import dependence. Although privately owned, the project has been described as an approximately US$1 billion integrated mining and processing development targeting production of up to 90,000 tonnes of magnesium per year, equivalent to roughly half of European Union demand. Magnesium is used in lightweight aluminium alloys for automotive manufacturing, packaging and industrial applications, while Europe remains heavily dependent on Chinese supply.
Fluorspar and Tungsten Support Industrial Manufacturing
Fluorspar and tungsten also occupy important positions within Europe’s industrial raw materials supply chain. Fluorspar is used in the production of hydrofluoric acid and serves industries including aluminium, refrigerants, chemicals and battery materials.
Tungsten is an essential raw material for cemented carbides, industrial tooling, aerospace components and defence applications. Although these markets are smaller than those for copper or lithium, supply disruptions can have significant effects on downstream manufacturing.
Strategic Importance Extends Beyond Market Size
Projects producing smaller-volume critical minerals often face different commercial conditions than large-scale base metal developments. These markets can be characterized by limited liquidity, less transparent pricing, concentrated offtake arrangements and financing structures that depend on specialized industrial customers.
The strategic significance of individual projects is closely linked to Europe’s domestic supply position. A mine producing 3,400 tonnes of tin annually can become important where regional production is limited, while a 90,000-tonne magnesium project has the potential to reduce a substantial import requirement. As Europe continues to strengthen supply chains for critical raw materials, the development of tin, magnesium, fluorspar and tungsten projects increasingly depends on progress in permitting, customer agreements, project financing and construction.
