Alkane Resources has expanded the mineral-resource inventory at its Björkdal gold mine in northern Sweden, with the latest estimate showing growth in resources and reserves despite another year of mining. The operation now has 22.47 million tonnes of Measured and Indicated resources grading 2.07 grams per tonne gold, containing approximately 1.497 million ounces. The Inferred resource adds 12.10 million tonnes at 1.57 g/t gold, equivalent to about 611,000 ounces.
Resource and Reserve Growth
Björkdal’s current Ore Reserves total 13.12 million tonnes grading 1.33 g/t gold for 563,000 ounces. Compared with the June 2025 resource and reserve position, Measured and Indicated resource tonnage has increased by approximately 10%, while contained gold has risen by about 7%.
Reserve ounces increased by roughly 4%, from approximately 543,000 ounces, despite a further year of production. The increase means the operation replaced the depletion associated with mining during the period. Alkane said exploration across its producing operations had allowed the group to replace depletion, with Björkdal contributing to the larger inventory.
Near-Mine Exploration at Björkdal
Björkdal is located in Västerbotten, an established Swedish mining region, and operates with existing underground and surface infrastructure. The latest resource figures include additional mineralisation identified through continued exploration around the operating mine. Mineralisation located close to existing infrastructure can require less capital to develop than deposits requiring new mining and processing infrastructure.
The expanded resource inventory also provides Alkane with additional areas to assess for conversion into reserves and incorporation into future production schedules. Resources do not automatically qualify as mineable reserves. Conversion depends on factors including mining geometry, dilution, recovery, operating costs, gold prices and the development required to access individual mineralised zones.
Reserve Grade and Mine Planning
Björkdal’s current reserve grade of 1.33 g/t gold is below the 2.07 g/t average grade of its Measured and Indicated resource base. Future mine economics will therefore depend on the sequencing of higher-grade areas while maintaining sufficient throughput. The resource and reserve update comes amid higher labour, energy and equipment costs affecting European gold producers, increasing the importance of extending existing operations where mining infrastructure is already established.
Brownfield resource growth provides an alternative to developing entirely new operations, where permitting and construction of new infrastructure would be required. The latest Björkdal inventory gives Alkane a larger resource base and higher reserves following another year of mining, with further resource-to-reserve conversion determining how the additional mineralisation is incorporated into future mine planning.
