Sovereign Metals Targets High-Value Rare-Earth Recovery at Kasiya

Sovereign Metals has identified a potential rare-earth operation within its Kasiya project in Malawi, adding monazite concentrate to a development already planned around natural rutile and graphite production. A scoping study estimates that monazite could be recovered from mineral streams generated by the proposed Kasiya processing plant. The additional rare-earth circuit would require incremental capital expenditure of approximately $29 million.

Rare-Earth Circuit Economics

Under the company’s base case, the proposed operation has a pre-tax net present value of $722 million, an internal rate of return of 151% and steady-state annual EBITDA of about $84 million.

The economics are based on adding the circuit to the existing Kasiya development rather than constructing a separate mining operation. The underlying rutile and graphite project has estimated initial capital expenditure of approximately $727 million. Sovereign’s study therefore incorporates rare-earth recovery into infrastructure and processing planned for the broader project, with the additional circuit requiring comparatively limited incremental capital.

Monazite Production and Rare-Earth Content

Average annual production is estimated at 2,626 tonnes of monazite concentrate, containing approximately 1,485 tonnes of total rare-earth oxides.

The concentrate would contain neodymium and praseodymium, alongside heavier rare earths including dysprosium, terbium and yttrium. These rare-earth materials are used in permanent magnets, defence systems, aircraft, electric vehicles and advanced electronics. Governments in Western countries are supporting additional processing and magnet capacity as they seek to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains.

Impact on Kasiya Valuation

The proposed rare-earth operation could increase the combined pre-tax NPV of Kasiya to approximately $2.9 billion. Its economic contribution is significantly larger than its estimated incremental capital requirement, with the $29 million circuit potentially adding $722 million in pre-tax NPV under the study’s base case. The project could also provide a basis for discussions involving governments, processors and potential offtake partners as Sovereign develops the broader Kasiya operation.

Further Technical and Development Work

The scoping study carries an estimated ±30% accuracy range, meaning the current economic figures do not represent a definitive development case. Further work remains necessary to establish product recoveries, concentrate quality, customer acceptance and financing for the rare-earth component.

Sovereign expects to advance the project toward a pre-feasibility study in 2027. Until that work is completed, the rare-earth circuit remains an integrated development option within Kasiya rather than a bankable project.
