Greenland’s Amitsoq Graphite Project: A Key Player in Europe’s EV Battery Supply Chain Strategy

As Europe intensifies its efforts to establish an independent supply chain for battery raw materials, the development of GreenRoc Strategic Materials’ Amitsoq graphite project in southern Greenland is gaining significant attention. This project is part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing reliance on Chinese graphite processing, which currently dominates the market.

GreenRoc is actively advancing both its mining operations and graphite processing capabilities. Recent updates indicate progress in drilling campaigns, a major pre-feasibility study, and the establishment of a pilot plant for Active Anode Materials in Denmark. These developments align with Europe’s urgent need for critical raw materials essential for electric vehicles and battery manufacturing, reflecting the continent’s long-term energy transition goals.

While lithium often takes center stage in discussions about electric vehicles, graphite’s role as a primary component of lithium-ion batteries cannot be overlooked. It constitutes the largest material component by weight in most EV battery anodes, making its supply security crucial for automakers and battery manufacturers. Currently, China controls a significant portion of global graphite purification and production, raising concerns among European stakeholders about supply chain vulnerabilities, especially following recent export restrictions imposed by Beijing.

GreenRoc’s Amitsoq project is emerging as one of Europe’s most promising graphite initiatives. Located in southern Greenland, it boasts one of the highest-grade graphite deposits globally, with estimates suggesting over 23 million tonnes at approximately 20-21% graphite content. This positions Amitsoq as a strategically important resource amidst growing competition for alternative sources of graphite within Western-aligned markets.

The project has achieved several key milestones, including recognition as an EU Strategic Project under the Critical Raw Materials Act, securing a 30-year exploitation license from Greenland’s government, and obtaining institutional support from European financing bodies. Additionally, it has received ESG certification through Digbee, enhancing its appeal to investors focused on sustainable practices.

GreenRoc aims not only to mine but also to develop downstream processing infrastructure within Europe. Its pilot facility in Denmark is designed to convert natural graphite flake concentrate into spherical purified graphite and active anode material—both vital for lithium-ion battery production. This strategic shift underscores a growing recognition that merely extracting raw materials is insufficient for achieving industrial independence.

The company has recently completed commissioning micronisation and spheronisation circuits at its Danish facility, marking it as Europe’s first natural graphite flake pilot processing plant of its kind. The final purification section is expected to be operational by 2026, further solidifying Europe’s position in the high-value segments of the graphite supply chain that are currently dominated by Chinese producers.

The Amitsoq project represents a critical component of Europe’s broader industrial transformation. Policymakers and industry leaders are increasingly prioritizing regional sourcing, supply-chain transparency, ESG compliance, low-carbon materials, and reduced geopolitical dependence in their strategies. GreenRoc’s collaboration with Norwegian battery producer Morrow Batteries exemplifies this ambition to create an integrated battery ecosystem that spans from raw material extraction to advanced manufacturing.

Institutional financing support is also growing for strategic mineral projects like Amitsoq. In 2025, Denmark’s export and investment fund provided GreenRoc with approximately €5.2 million in secured financing. This trend reflects a recognition that Europe must directly support mining and processing initiatives previously deemed too remote or costly in order to secure access to essential battery minerals.

With substantial untapped deposits of graphite and other critical minerals such as rare earth elements and titanium, Greenland is emerging as a strategic hub for Europe’s critical mineral needs. However, challenges remain due to infrastructure limitations, high capital costs, complex permitting systems, and competition from lower-cost Chinese producers. As demand for EVs escalates rapidly across Europe, many domestic graphite projects are still years away from commercial production, creating a pressing need for accelerated support from governments and industry stakeholders.
