NioCorp Reports €361 Million Cash Position as Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project Advances

NioCorp Developments has reported approximately €361 million in cash, providing financial capacity as it advances the Elk Creek critical-minerals project in Nebraska, United States, and pursues the financing required to construct its planned mine and processing complex.

The project is designed to produce niobium, scandium, titanium and rare earths, targeting industrial supply chains serving high-strength steel, aerospace, permanent magnets and defence manufacturing. Its commercial arrangements include long-term ferroniobium offtake agreements with Germany’s Thyssenkrupp and commodities trader Traxys, covering essentially all planned production of the alloying metal.

European Offtake Agreements Cover Planned Ferroniobium Production

Under the agreement with Thyssenkrupp, the German industrial group will purchase 50% of planned ferroniobium production during the first 10 years of operation. A separate agreement with Traxys covers the remaining 50% of planned output over 15 years.

These contracts establish commercial arrangements for the project’s planned ferroniobium production and provide identified customers for the alloying metal. Long-term offtake agreements can help reduce project risk by establishing a market for future output, although they do not independently provide the capital required for mine construction.

The Thyssenkrupp agreement has particular relevance for European industry because niobium strengthens and improves the durability of specialised steels, potentially reducing the amount of steel required in certain applications. European manufacturers remain dependent on imported niobium, making alternative sources of supply relevant to steelmaking and advanced manufacturing.

Cash Reserves and Development Expenditure

NioCorp reported approximately €361 million in cash at the end of its reporting period. The company also recorded quarterly net income of around €3.3 million, although this result was driven largely by non-cash accounting effects rather than revenue from mineral production.

Operating activities generated a cash outflow of approximately €5.4 million, while investment activities consumed a further €5.3 million, principally reflecting continued work on mine-access infrastructure.

The company has already started construction of the Elk Creek access portal, marking physical progress at the development-stage project. The reported cash balance represents existing corporate liquidity rather than an approved construction-financing package.

Construction Financing Remains Outstanding

NioCorp continues to pursue potential debt support from the U.S. Export-Import Bank to help finance the project. The potential support cannot be classified as committed project debt until a final lending decision has been made and definitive documentation and drawdown conditions have been completed.

A proposed Traxys equity investment of up to approximately €26.7 million also remains subject to negotiations and definitive agreements. The project therefore has distinct levels of financial certainty: its cash position has been reported, its ferroniobium offtake agreements are established, and the larger financing package required to complete the mine and processing complex remains under development.

Elk Creek’s Role in Western Critical Minerals Supply Chains

The project combines a substantial mineral resource, ongoing physical site development and identified industrial customers. These elements position Elk Creek among Western critical-minerals developments seeking to establish supply outside China, while the outstanding construction financing remains a central requirement.

For European industrial buyers, the existing offtake agreement provides a contractual route to future ferroniobium production. Actual deliveries, however, depend on the mine being financed and constructed. The next major development milestone for Elk Creek is securing binding construction financing to advance the planned mine and processing facilities toward production.
