District Metals Intersects Up to 198 Metres of Alum Shale at Sweden’s Viken Project

District Metals has intersected up to 198.3 metres of cumulative alum shale in new drilling at its Viken uranium and polymetallic project in central Sweden, identifying additional prospective formations beyond the existing mineral resource boundaries.

The Canadian exploration company reported results from four diamond drill holes at Target A in Jämtland County. The intersections contain graphitic shale associated with uranium, vanadium and other critical minerals, although laboratory assays are still required to establish metal grades and potential economic significance.

The results come as Sweden has reopened uranium mining and District advances exploration around a project with a previously estimated €2.57 billion after-tax net present value.

Drilling Identifies Extensive Alum-Shale Formations

Drill hole VIK-26-005 intersected 198.3 metres of cumulative alum shale between down-hole depths of 24 and 274.1 metres, including a principal continuous interval of 196 metres. The other holes returned 177.1 metres in VIK-26-004, 82 metres in VIK-26-002 and 73 metres in VIK-26-003.

The intersections consist of strongly graphitic black shale, consistent with formations identified during previous exploration. Handheld scintillometer measurements recorded radioactivity of up to 750 counts per second.

These measurements do not establish uranium grades, and the reported intervals represent down-hole core lengths rather than confirmed true mineralised thicknesses. Geochemical assays will be needed to determine the concentrations of uranium, vanadium and other metals.

Geological Structures Create Thicker Intervals

Individual alum-shale sequences typically measure approximately 5–20 metres in natural thickness. At Target A, geological deformation appears to have stacked or repeated these formations, creating substantially thicker cumulative intersections.

Further drilling will be required to establish their true thickness, continuity and orientation, as well as the implications for potential mining methods and resource modelling.

The programme tested conductive anomalies identified through a 2025 MobileMT airborne geophysical survey. All four holes encountered substantial alum-shale sequences, providing geological support for the survey results.

District plans to continue exploration across Targets A and B to investigate additional mineralised zones and potential extensions beyond the existing deposit.

Viken Project Economics and Production Outlook

District’s preliminary economic assessment, filed under Canada’s NI 43-101 framework in July 2026, estimated an after-tax NPV of approximately €2.57 billion, using an 8% discount rate.

The study also outlined:

  • Initial capital expenditure: approximately €781 million.

  • Internal rate of return: 45.9%.

  • Capital payback period: 2.1 years.

  • Mine life: 13 years.

  • Annual uranium production: approximately 3.3 million pounds of uranium oxide.

  • Annual vanadium production: approximately 16 million pounds of vanadium pentoxide.

  • Annual potash production: approximately 250,000 tonnes of sulphate of potash.

The production figures are preliminary projections rather than approved commitments. The economic assessment relies on several mineral products and includes 23% Inferred resources in planned processing feed.

The proposed processing operation would need to recover uranium and vanadium alongside other potentially valuable materials, including molybdenum and nickel. Metallurgical recoveries, processing costs, reagent consumption and waste management will therefore be important to project economics.

Sweden’s Uranium Legislation and Permitting Framework

Sweden reopened uranium mining effective, reversing restrictions introduced in 2018. Additional legislation in July removed the municipal veto specifically associated with classifying uranium mines as nuclear facilities. Separate regulatory questions remain for mineral extraction from alum shale. A government-appointed inquiry is examining whether municipalities should receive stronger approval powers over exploitation concessions involving these deposits.

Environmental permitting will also need to address groundwater protection, radioactive materials, waste management, rehabilitation and long-term environmental liabilities.

European Demand for Uranium and Vanadium

Viken could contribute to European supplies of uranium and vanadium, which serve nuclear power generation, steelmaking, industrial alloys and energy-storage technologies. The project’s potential commercial value depends on confirming additional mineralisation, demonstrating metallurgical recoveries and securing the necessary environmental approvals.

District’s immediate priorities include laboratory assays from the latest drilling, further exploration at Targets A and B, and continued geological modelling. The new intersections have not yet resulted in an updated mineral resource, and the project has no announced final investment decision or committed development financing.
