Newmont Secures Approvals for Red Chris Block Cave Copper Project in Canada

Newmont has received key regulatory approvals for the Red Chris Block Cave project in British Columbia, allowing the operation to advance from open-pit mining toward a block-caving method and supporting a planned extension of mine life into the mid-2040s.

The approvals include an amended Environmental Assessment Certificate completed through a consent-based process with the Tahltan Nation, along with an amended Mines Act permit for the project.

Underground Transition Extends Red Chris Mine Development

The Red Chris project represents a transition from conventional open-pit mining to block cave mining, a method designed for extracting large, deeper ore bodies through long-term underground operations.

The move requires changes in mining approach, operational planning and capital requirements. The regulatory approvals represent a key development milestone as Newmont advances technical studies and project planning for the underground expansion.

Project Expected to Increase Canadian Copper Output

Newmont estimates that the Red Chris Block Cave project could create more than 1,800 construction jobs and support approximately 1,500 peak-season operating positions.

The company also expects the project to increase Canada’s copper production by around 15%, highlighting its importance within the country’s copper supply profile. Copper demand continues to be associated with electrification, power grid development and industrial decarbonisation, while large-scale copper projects often require extended permitting processes and significant investment before entering production.

Definitive Feasibility Study to Guide Investment Decision

The next major milestone for Red Chris is the completion of a definitive feasibility study and a detailed cost estimate, which will support a final investment decision on the block-cave development.

The project includes several infrastructure and development factors, including resource scale, access to hydroelectric power, port infrastructure and participation from the Tahltan Nation. Newmont’s assessment of the project will determine whether these factors can support the capital requirements associated with a multi-decade underground mining operation.
