Greece expands processing for aluminum, gallium and copper supply chains

Greece’s mining sector is undergoing a structural transformation that extends beyond extraction. The country is increasingly positioned as a European hub for critical raw materials, copper, and advanced metal processing. The shift is linked to Europe’s need to secure strategic supply chains for the energy transition and high-tech manufacturing.

Across Europe, the focus is moving from mineral access to control of refining, processing and industrial conversion capacity. These capabilities are used to produce inputs for batteries, semiconductors, defense systems and renewable energy infrastructure.

Metlen investment targets alumina expansion and gallium production

Metlen Energy & Metals is at the center of Greece’s industrial metals build-out. The company has launched an investment programme of more than €295 million at its Agios Nikolaos industrial complex. The plan targets alumina production capacity of around 2 million tonnes annually.

The expansion is intended to strengthen Greece’s role in European aluminum production while supporting the country’s broader industrial base. A planned element of the project is gallium production, a metal used in semiconductors, radar systems, telecommunications and defense electronics.

Metlen’s gallium plans are described as gaining importance after export restrictions from China. Those restrictions highlighted Europe’s dependence on external supply chains for critical materials.

Greece already hosts an integrated aluminum ecosystem connecting bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum production within a single industrial structure. This integration is presented as increasingly valuable as demand rises in sectors including electric vehicles, grid expansion, offshore wind, aerospace manufacturing and data center infrastructure.

The source links the energy transition to aluminum-intensive applications. Transmission networks, wind turbines, EV platforms and storage systems are described as relying heavily on lightweight, durable metals.

Within that context, Greece’s aluminum industry is described as shifting from a traditional industrial base toward a component of Europe’s energy transition economy.

Eldorado Gold’s Skouries project advances copper development in Halkidiki

Northern Greece is also seeing expanded mining activity focused on copper and gold. The flagship development is Skouries, operated by Eldorado Gold within the broader Kassandra Mines complex in Halkidiki.

Skouries has capital expenditure exceeding $1 billion, and is described as among the largest mining projects currently under construction in Europe. Once operational, it is expected to become a significant source of copper.

The source connects copper demand growth to electric vehicles, grid modernization, energy storage systems and digital infrastructure such as data centers. It also frames Skouries as relevant to electrification needs and renewable energy systems.

Value-chain integration expands into ports, logistics and processing

A key change in Greece’s mining sector is described as occurring across the full value chain rather than only underground. The industry is increasingly integrating mining, refining, energy systems, logistics and industrial processing into unified structures.

The shift reflects a broader European move away from exporting raw concentrates while importing higher-value processed materials. Greece’s geographic position at the intersection of Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean is cited as supporting this transition.

The country is described as becoming a logistics and processing gateway for critical minerals flows into Europe. Investment is also directed toward ports, industrial zones, storage infrastructure and processing facilities supporting regional supply chains.

Renewables integration aligns with lower-carbon metallurgy requirements

An additional trend highlighted in Greece involves convergence between mining activity and industrial decarbonisation. Greek industrial groups are integrating renewable energy, electrified production systems and lower-carbon metallurgy into their operations.

For aluminum producers specifically, access to low-carbon electricity is described as becoming a competitive advantage. The source links this to tightening European carbon regulation and buyer demand for lower embedded emissions.

It also notes alignment with EU frameworks including the Critical Raw Materials Act, which emphasizes both supply security and sustainability in industrial development.

Greece positions projects around processing capacity and strategic metals

Greece’s mining sector is described as evolving from a resource extraction model toward a value-added industrial ecosystem. The focus shifts toward processing capacity, technological integration and strategic relevance rather than production volumes alone.

The source presents overlapping investment themes including copper, aluminum and gallium alongside critical raw materials, industrial processing and renewable energy integration. It places these developments within a European supply-chain security framework.

Projects referenced include Metlen’s €295 million expansion at Agios Nikolaos with an alumina target of around 2 million tonnes annually, planned gallium production and Eldorado Gold’s Skouries development in Halkidiki.
