AIM-listed Great Southern Copper has completed a 2,474-metre reverse-circulation drilling programme at its Especularita project in Chile, testing four exploration targets for evidence of a porphyry copper system.
The campaign comprised 17 reverse-circulation holes across Piedras Blancas, Artemisa North, Victoria and Artemisa South. Drilling intersected alteration interpreted to be consistent with the outer portions of a porphyry copper system. The results remain at the geological exploration stage. Alteration associated with porphyry systems does not by itself establish copper grades, mineralisation continuity, geometry or the parameters required to define a mineral resource.
Assays to determine mineralisation potential
Great Southern Copper is awaiting assay results from the completed drilling. The results will determine whether the intercepted zones contain commercially meaningful copper and associated gold. Further exploration would need to investigate extensions at depth and identify the intrusive centre that could host stronger mineralisation. The 2,474-metre programme represents an initial drilling campaign relative to the work normally required to define a porphyry deposit.
Even positive assay results would lead to additional exploration work, potentially including deeper diamond drilling, geophysical surveys, metallurgical testing and resource modelling.
AIM listing provides exploration funding access
Especularita’s European capital-market connection comes through Great Southern Copper’s London AIM listing. The market provides access to specialist exploration capital, while continued advancement of the project remains dependent on successive equity financing until a sufficiently robust discovery can attract a larger mining company or strategic partner.
Chile has established mining infrastructure and a mining-services base, providing the regional setting for continued exploration. Before a discovery could progress toward development, the project would also need to address water access, environmental approvals and community acceptance.
The latest drilling therefore remains an exploration-stage programme focused on testing the geological extent of the Especularita targets. Assay results from the 17 holes will determine whether the alteration encountered across Piedras Blancas, Artemisa North, Victoria and Artemisa South represents part of a larger copper system or more limited zones of alteration.
