International Graphite has marked a significant advancement in the European graphite supply chain by achieving ultra-high purification levels exceeding 99.9% total graphitic carbon (TGC). This milestone was confirmed through rigorous testing in collaboration with Italian partner Alkeemia at specialized facilities in Porto Marghera. The results bolster efforts to create a localized processing hub for critical raw materials, responding to increasing demands for supply chain localization.
The test program evaluated seven graphite concentrate samples sourced from a diverse range of locations, including the Springdale project in Western Australia and various sites across Africa and Europe. All samples surpassed the crucial 99.9% purity benchmark, with results ranging from 99.91% to 99.98% TGC. This uniformity across different flake sizes and geological origins underscores the reliability of the purification process, which is vital in a global market where feedstock quality can significantly impact performance.
Moreover, the consistent results across multiple input sources position this initiative as a multi-feedstock processing hub rather than merely a traditional mining operation. This flexibility enhances supply chain resilience by mitigating reliance on single upstream sources, a growing concern within the lithium-ion battery materials sector.
Central to this achievement is Alkeemia’s hydrofluoric acid (HF) purification technology, recognized as one of the few industrial methods capable of producing battery-grade graphite at scale. The recent findings validate that this process can effectively transform various concentrates into high-purity materials suitable for lithium-ion battery anodes, expandable graphite applications, and advanced industrial energy storage systems.
The partnership between International Graphite and Alkeemia is advancing towards establishing a dedicated graphite processing facility in Italy under a joint venture agreement. Initial production capacity is projected at around 200 tonnes per year, with ambitions to expand to 20,000 tonnes annually by 2030. This scalable purification platform is crucial for meeting the rising demand for battery-grade graphite in Europe.
This initiative aligns with Europe’s strategic objective to diminish dependency on external sources for critical raw materials like graphite, which remains pivotal for electric vehicle (EV) battery production. By consistently demonstrating ultra-high purity across multiple feedstocks, this project not only mitigates upstream supply risks but also enhances regional security of supply while potentially generating revenue through toll-processing third-party materials.
