European Graphite Processing Gains Momentum with New Joint Venture in Italy

In a significant move to enhance the European supply chain for critical raw materials, International Graphite has partnered with Italian chemical firm Alkeemia to establish a dedicated graphite processing facility in Porto Marghera, Italy. This venture underscores a pivotal shift in the raw materials sector, where the focus is increasingly on downstream processing capabilities rather than solely on upstream mining operations.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure Advantages

The chosen site for the facility is strategically located within Alkeemia’s existing industrial complex, providing immediate access to established chemical infrastructure and a skilled workforce. By leveraging this operational base, the joint venture aims to minimize development timelines and capital expenditures while facilitating quicker integration into Europe’s expanding battery supply chain.

Joint Venture Structure and Collaborative Expertise

The partnership will see Alkeemia holding a 51% stake, while International Graphite retains 49%, with profits shared equally. This balanced structure allows both companies to contribute their unique strengths: Alkeemia will provide the site and operational management, while International Graphite will offer financial backing and proprietary processing technology. This collaboration reflects a broader trend in Europe towards partnerships that enhance processing capacity within the raw materials sector.

Production Goals Focused on Battery-Grade Graphite

The facility is projected to produce around 10,000 tonnes of high-purity graphite annually in its initial phase, with potential expansion to 20,000 tonnes by 2030. This output is crucial for supplying battery-grade graphite essential for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The commissioning of the facility is anticipated by late 2027, aligning with Europe’s push for enhanced battery material production.

High Purity Achievements Bolster Market Position

Recent pilot testing has demonstrated impressive results, achieving over 99.9% carbon purity—an essential benchmark for battery-grade graphite. This level of refinement is critical as European manufacturers seek reliable alternatives to imported processed graphite, predominantly sourced from Asia. The successful testing validates the technical feasibility of producing high-quality materials for advanced tech applications.

This joint venture aligns closely with the European Union’s strategy to localize supply chains for critical raw materials like graphite, which is vital for EV battery production. Currently, Europe relies heavily on imports for processed graphite. The new facility aims to mitigate this dependency by bolstering domestic processing capabilities within the EU.

The International Graphite-Alkeemia collaboration exemplifies a shift towards partnership-based models in Europe’s industrial landscape. This joint venture marks a strategic transition for International Graphite from upstream resource extraction in Western Australia to higher-value downstream processing. Binding agreements are expected by May 2026, with a Final Investment Decision targeted for June 2026.
