Bleiberg Zinc-Germanium Project in Austria Poised to Enhance Europe’s Critical Raw Materials Supply

Battery Age Minerals is making significant strides in revitalizing the Bleiberg project, a historically rich polymetallic district in southern Austria. Recent drilling results have confirmed the presence of a zinc-lead-germanium system, aligning with Europe’s urgent need for domestic sources of critical raw materials. This project is crucial as the continent seeks to reduce reliance on imports and bolster its supply chains.

The exploration campaign, which took place in early 2026, involved six diamond drill holes totaling 1,685 meters and focused on two key areas: Rubland and Tschöklnock. These targets are situated within the Bleiberg-Kreuth mining corridor, an area renowned for its high-grade polymetallic deposits.

A Historic Mining District Repositioned for Modern Demand

Bleiberg’s mining legacy spans over 700 years, with historical production averaging about 5% zinc and 1% lead, alongside notable germanium concentrations. This historical context enhances the project’s relevance as germanium gains traction as a strategic material in technology sectors such as semiconductors and fiber optics. Battery Age Minerals is leveraging contemporary geological models to explore extensions of previously mined areas and identify overlooked mineralized systems.

Rubland Target Delivers Encouraging High-Grade Intercepts

Drilling at the Rubland zone has yielded promising results, revealing multiple mineralized intervals linked to carbonate-hosted replacement systems. Noteworthy intercepts include 11.0 meters grading 0.58% Zn+Pb and a higher-grade section of 2.5 meters at 3.96% Zn+Pb. These findings suggest the presence of higher-grade shoots within a broader mineralized envelope, indicating potential for scalable resource development.

Tschöklnock Highlights System Scale Over Grade

The Tschöklnock target presents a different exploration narrative, emphasizing system scale rather than immediate grade. A significant interval of 40.8 meters of zinc mineralization was discovered above a cutoff grade of 0.20%, associated with fault-controlled carbonate breccias along the Schliewa Fault. This suggests a large hydrothermal system consistent with Mississippi Valley-type deposits, where higher-grade zones may exist at greater depths.

Germanium as Strategic Upside in Europe’s Supply Chain

While current drilling indicates modest germanium levels, this metal remains vital due to Europe’s heavy reliance on imports, particularly from China. If further drilling uncovers higher-grade zones, Bleiberg could transition from a conventional zinc-lead project into a critical metals asset that aligns with EU industrial policies.

Ownership Structure and Exploration Upside

Battery Age Minerals currently holds a 51% stake in the Bleiberg joint venture, with plans to increase ownership through additional exploration spending by 2027 and upon completion of a JORC-compliant feasibility study targeting production of at least 100,000 tonnes per year by 2030. The company also controls additional ground through wholly owned claims, enhancing its strategic position in the region.

Shift Toward Brownfield Exploration Strategy

Following initial successes, Battery Age Minerals is pivoting toward brownfield exploration strategies that focus on extensions of historically mined zones and new high-priority targets like Windisch Alp. This approach minimizes exploration risks while capitalizing on existing geological knowledge.

Permitting Constraints Shape Early Results

A significant challenge faced by the project has been regulatory depth restrictions limiting drilling to less than 300 meters. This constraint implies that current results likely reflect only the upper sections of the mineral system, leaving deeper potentially richer zones untested. Future permitting for deeper drilling will be essential for unlocking the project’s full resource potential.

Strategic Position Within Europe’s Critical Raw Materials Framework

The Bleiberg project is increasingly aligned with Europe’s Critical Raw Materials Act aimed at strengthening domestic supply chains for metals like zinc, lead, and germanium. Battery Age Minerals is actively engaging stakeholders and regulators to integrate the project into EU-aligned supply frameworks.

Early Signals With Long-Term Potential

Despite being in early-stage exploration without defined resources, several key indicators suggest promising potential: confirmed mineralization across multiple targets, strong structural controls indicating scalable systems, and the presence of strategic by-product metals like germanium within a historically significant mining district.

Balancing Exploration Risk and Strategic Value

The Bleiberg project embodies both geological uncertainty and strategic importance amid growing European demand for critical raw materials. The next phase of drilling—particularly deeper tests—will be pivotal in determining whether Bleiberg develops into a scalable zinc-lead-germanium resource or remains limited in scope. Its value hinges on geological potential, historical production pedigree, and alignment with Europe’s tech-driven raw materials demand.
