British metals-processing company DEScycle has opened its first industrial demonstration facility at the Wilton Centre in Teesside, marking the first operational deployment of its distributed critical-metals recovery platform. The facility began operations on 12 July and represents a move of the company’s technology into an industrial demonstration environment.
The plant operates at a 250-kilogram batch scale and is designed to process between 50 and 100 tonnes of material annually during the demonstration phase. The commissioning of the facility advances the technology to Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL 7), indicating that the process is being tested in an operational industrial setting rather than only through laboratory work or smaller pilot programmes.
Electronic waste feedstock to produce recovered metals
The Teesside demonstration plant will initially process printed circuit boards and complex electronic waste supplied through DEScycle’s UK joint-venture partner GAP Group. The first targeted recovered products are expected to include gold, copper, silver and palladium.
DEScycle is also developing recovery processes for additional metals, including tin, iron and aluminium, as the platform progresses. The company’s technology combines deep eutectic solvents with ionometallurgy to extract metals at significantly lower temperatures than conventional smelting processes.
Modular processing model targets decentralised recycling
DEScycle’s commercial approach is based on deploying modular processing units closer to locations where waste materials are generated. The model is designed to reduce transportation requirements and avoid dependence on large-scale centralised smelting facilities. The Teesside demonstration plant is intended to provide operational data needed to assess the performance of the technology, including recovery efficiency, processing costs and product quality.
Industrial partnerships support development programme
Technology trials at the facility will include retired electronic equipment supplied by Cisco. The partnership will provide DEScycle with industrial feedstock for testing while generating information on metal recovery, traceability and commercial processing costs.
Mitsubishi Corporation will conduct an offtake study to evaluate potential markets for metals produced through the demonstration facility. The relationships with Cisco and Mitsubishi cover key parts of DEScycle’s planned business model, including feedstock access, modular processing capability and downstream metal sales. The arrangements do not represent confirmed long-term supply contracts or binding agreements for future metal purchases.
Series A funding supported facility construction
The Teesside demonstration plant follows DEScycle’s completion of a £10.2 million Series A financing round in 2024. The funding was intended in part to support construction and operation of the demonstration facility. The opening of the plant also follows the UK government’s announcement in June of a £50 million critical-minerals funding programme. The government initiative is a broader policy measure and does not represent a confirmed £50 million award to DEScycle.
Gateshead facility planned as next commercial-scale step
DEScycle’s next planned expansion stage is a commercial electronic-waste processing facility in Gateshead. The proposed facility is expected to process approximately 5,000 tonnes of material annually.
Compared with the Teesside demonstration operation, which is designed for 50–100 tonnes per year, the Gateshead project would require a substantial increase in processing capacity. The current demonstration plant represents approximately 1% to 2% of the planned commercial throughput.
Operational results to determine commercial expansion
Data generated from the Teesside facility will be used to evaluate key technical and commercial parameters. These include metal recovery rates, reagent recycling performance, energy consumption, batch consistency, product purity and unit processing costs. The results will determine the potential pathway toward securing financing for commercial expansion, including project equity, equipment financing or strategic corporate investment. The demonstration facility provides DEScycle with operational validation, identified feedstock sources and downstream market relationships. Scaling from 50–100 tonnes annually at the Teesside site to approximately 5,000 tonnes annually at Gateshead would require a 50-fold to 100-fold increase in processing capacity.
