Chile’s state-owned mining company Codelco says its El Teniente division has obtained both The Copper Mark and The Molybdenum Mark certifications. The company links the outcome to a certification process that verified compliance with environmental, social and governance standards and responsible mineral production practices. Codelco also states the result reflects increased attention to sustainability, transparency and traceability as demand for responsibly sourced copper and molybdenum rises.
On-site evaluation for responsible production and value chain management
Codelco said the certification process included a detailed on-site evaluation by independent auditors. Auditors reviewed El Teniente’s policies, operational controls, environmental performance, community engagement and governance frameworks. The assessment concluded that the division’s mining and processing operations meet internationally recognized standards for responsible production and value chain management.
The company said the recognition places El Teniente among mining operations working to align with global expectations for sustainable resource development. Codelco added that the certifications are intended to set a benchmark for future activities at the operation. Those activities include underground mine expansions, tailings management programs and infrastructure upgrades.
ESG certification amid scrutiny over copper production figures
Codelco said the dual certification comes at a strategically important time for the company. It noted that it has faced scrutiny connected to internal audit findings involving misclassified copper production figures at its Chuquicamata and Ministro Hales divisions. In that context, Codelco said independent third-party verification of responsible production practices may help strengthen confidence among regulators, investors, customers and global commodity markets.
