Boliden Expands European Metals Portfolio Amid Garpenberg Operational Challenges

Boliden’s expansion of its European mining portfolio has strengthened its position in zinc, copper and other industrial metals, following the acquisition of Neves-Corvo in Portugal and Zinkgruvan in Sweden from Lundin Mining. The transaction increased Boliden’s exposure to major European base-metals districts, adding producing assets and infrastructure while the company continues to manage operational challenges at the Garpenberg mine in Sweden.

Lundin Mining acquisition strengthens zinc and copper footprint

The acquisition of Neves-Corvo and Zinkgruvan marked a significant expansion of Boliden’s European base-metals platform. Located in Portugal, Neves-Corvo is a major Iberian mining complex with exposure to copper and zinc production. The Swedish Zinkgruvan operation adds a long-life zinc-lead-silver mine supported by established infrastructure. The expanded portfolio increases Boliden’s presence in European metals supply chains at a time when regional production of industrial metals is receiving increased attention.

Base metals remain central to European industrial supply

Boliden’s enlarged asset base provides exposure to metals used across infrastructure, construction and electrification.

Zinc is a key material for galvanizing steel used in construction and infrastructure projects, while copper is essential for electricity networks, electrification and industrial applications. Additional value can come from lead, silver and other by-products produced from the company’s operations. The combination of mining and smelting activities gives Boliden exposure across multiple stages of the metals value chain.

Copper growth opportunities continue in Sweden

Beyond acquisitions, Boliden retains potential future copper growth through the Nautanen deposit near the Aitik mine in northern Sweden.

Aitik is already one of Europe’s largest copper mines, and the nearby Nautanen deposit represents a potential addition to Boliden’s future copper development pipeline by benefiting from existing regional infrastructure.

Garpenberg disruption creates operational uncertainty

Despite the strengthened asset portfolio, Boliden continues to face operational challenges at Garpenberg, one of its key Swedish mining operations. The mine experienced disruption following abnormal seismic activity affecting part of the operation. The most impacted area was not expected to return to production during 2026. The interruption has implications for production levels, operating costs, mine planning and investor expectations, particularly because Boliden’s valuation is partly linked to reliable European operating cash flow.

Integration and operational performance remain key factors

Following the Lundin Mining transaction, Boliden’s larger asset base provides increased exposure to European zinc and copper production. The company’s future performance will depend on successful integration of Neves-Corvo and Zinkgruvan, continued management of the Garpenberg disruption and advancement of future copper opportunities.

Boliden operates in European jurisdictions with established infrastructure, skilled labour and regulatory frameworks, while also facing requirements related to environmental standards, energy costs and permitting processes. The company’s expanded portfolio provides operating scale, smelting integration, cash flow generation and exposure to multiple mining regions, while remaining subject to geological conditions, operational complexity and processing performance.
