Elmet Raises EQ Resources Stake as Western Tungsten Supply Strategy Expands

The Elmet Group has increased its investment in Australian-listed EQ Resources, strengthening a partnership aimed at developing more secure Western tungsten supply chains as industrial users seek greater access to strategic raw materials.

Elmet exercised an option to acquire an additional 20 million ordinary shares in EQ Resources, increasing its total ownership position to 23.65 million shares. The transaction builds on a strategic relationship established in 2024, combining equity participation with a long-term tungsten supply arrangement linking mining operations with downstream manufacturing.

Industrial partnership connects tungsten mining and manufacturing

The investment reflects a growing trend in critical minerals markets where industrial consumers are seeking direct exposure to upstream producers rather than relying only on commodity purchases.

Companies involved in defence, aerospace, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing and energy technologies are increasingly looking to secure future mineral supplies through ownership stakes, long-term agreements and closer cooperation with mining companies.

EQ Resources operates tungsten projects in Spain and Australia, while Elmet is a United States-based manufacturer producing precision-engineered components and advanced materials for aerospace, defence, industrial, semiconductor and energy applications. The partnership is designed to connect EQ Resources’ mining operations in Europe and Australia with Elmet’s downstream manufacturing capabilities in the United States.

Barruecopardo tungsten supply agreement supports expansion plans

Elmet’s increased equity position strengthens an existing offtake relationship covering tungsten concentrate from EQ Resources’ Barruecopardo operation in Spain. Under the agreement, Elmet committed to purchase tungsten concentrate from Barruecopardo over a mutually renewable five-year period.

The offtake arrangement was originally valued at approximately A$30 million, providing EQ Resources with greater certainty for production planning and future development activities. The combination of equity investment and guaranteed purchasing commitments reflects a shift in how critical mineral supply chains are being structured, with producers and consumers increasingly aligning their interests through long-term commercial relationships.

Tungsten gains importance in strategic industries

Tungsten has become a focus material in efforts to strengthen Western critical mineral supply chains because of its physical properties, including high hardness, density and resistance to extreme temperatures. The metal is used in a range of industrial applications, including cutting tools, aerospace components, defence systems, semiconductor equipment and advanced manufacturing processes.

Growing attention on supply security has increased interest from governments and industrial companies seeking alternatives to concentrated sources of tungsten production. For EQ Resources, the relationship with Elmet provides additional support for its objective of developing a significant Western tungsten production platform while advancing its operations in Spain and Australia.

Equity investments reshape critical minerals financing

The Elmet transaction highlights a broader change in mining finance, where industrial customers are becoming more directly involved in supporting the development of strategic mineral projects. Rather than depending exclusively on banks, institutional investors or public markets, some mining companies are attracting investment from end users seeking reliable access to future production.

This approach combines capital investment, offtake agreements, technical cooperation and downstream manufacturing links within a single supply-chain structure. The model reduces separation between mineral producers and industrial consumers by creating stronger connections between mining operations and the companies that rely on their products.

Western governments seek diversified mineral supply chains

The investment comes as governments in Europe and North America focus on developing more resilient supply chains for critical raw materials used in defence, industrial production and energy technologies. Private-sector partnerships such as the Elmet and EQ Resources relationship demonstrate growing alignment between industrial investment decisions and broader supply-chain security objectives.

The development also reflects wider changes in critical minerals policy, where companies are increasingly prioritising resource security, processing capability, supply-chain transparency and strategic independence. While the transaction is separate from carbon-focused industrial policies such as the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, both policy areas are contributing to changes in how companies manage industrial supply risks. For tungsten and other critical minerals, long-term ownership relationships and supply agreements are becoming increasingly important features of the global mining sector.
