An explosion at the ArcelorMittal plant in Gijón, Spain, on September 17 left three workers injured. The incident occurred around 14:00 local time during maintenance on the coke gas network. According to the steel giant’s statement, an overpressure in the supply circuit to coke oven battery No. 1 led to a safety valve bursting, resulting in the explosion as three workers from contractor company Daorje passed by.
The injured workers sustained burns and were promptly transported to Asturias Central Hospital. Fortunately, their conditions are serious but stable. The plant’s fire brigade quickly brought the fire under control, and production resumed later that evening at 23:45, with operations gradually returning to normal.
The Gijón facility, located in the Asturias region of northwestern Spain, features a steel plant equipped with two oxygen converters, secondary metallurgy systems, and various casting and milling operations. It specializes in producing high-quality wire rod for demanding applications.
This incident follows a fire at the plant in March 2023, which halted production but resulted in no injuries.
