European Mining Stocks Gain as Copper Strength Drives Sector Rotation

European mining equities ended the 20–24 July 2026 trading week higher, supported by firm copper prices, stronger precious metals and renewed interest in diversified miners. Performance remained uneven as investors increasingly focused on production, free cash flow, project execution and balance sheets.

Copper supports London miners

Anglo American led major gains, with shares rising almost 10%. Investors responded to stable copper production, lower expected operating costs and progress in its restructuring. The proposed combination with Teck Resources has strengthened expectations that Anglo could become one of the world’s largest listed copper producers.

Glencore, Antofagasta and Rio Tinto also benefited from the copper environment. Glencore was supported by its copper portfolio and marketing division, while Antofagasta continued to attract investors seeking copper exposure despite expansion-related capital spending in Chile. Rio Tinto’s gains were more limited as iron ore remained under pressure amid mixed Chinese steel production, keeping the company’s performance linked to conditions in China’s construction sector.

Silver producers attract buying

Silver outperformed gold during the week, supporting specialist producers. Fresnillo recovered despite lower quarterly production as investors focused on higher realised precious-metal prices and maintained annual guidance. Hochschild Mining also gained after confirming production remained broadly on track with annual guidance. Higher operating costs from inflation remained a challenge, but the company continued to benefit from a strong balance sheet and its development pipeline.

Execution remains a key differentiator

Outside London, investors were more selective. Boliden fell despite substantially higher earnings and revenue above expectations, with investors focusing on negative free cash flow, slower commissioning of new processing capacity and operational disruptions at key assets. Eramet remained under pressure over financing requirements, manganese prices and restructuring efforts.

The contrasting performances highlight the growing importance of capital discipline and operational execution across European mining equities. Companies with advanced projects, secure financing and credible delivery plans are attracting greater investor interest, while operators facing permitting delays, cost inflation or financing uncertainty face greater valuation pressure. Copper fundamentals remain supportive, particularly from electrification, grid expansion and artificial intelligence infrastructure, while precious metals continue to benefit from geopolitical uncertainty and expectations of lower interest rates.
