New Copper Discovery in Bor Enhances Serbia’s Strategic Role in European Raw Materials Supply

A significant copper deposit has been discovered near Bor in eastern Serbia, marking a pivotal development for the region’s mining sector and its contribution to Europe’s critical raw materials supply chain. This new find underscores the Bor mining basin’s long-standing importance, which has been a focal point of European mining for over a century.

Initial assessments indicate that this newly identified copper ore body is substantial, suggesting that the Bor area still harbors considerable untapped mineral potential. The Bor basin is already recognized as one of Europe’s most prolific copper-producing regions, with historical mining activities dating back to the early 1900s. Major deposits such as Veliki Krivelj and Borska Reka are among the largest globally, collectively containing hundreds of millions to over a billion tonnes of copper ore across various sites.

The discovery’s significance is further amplified by the operational context provided by Zijin Mining, which manages the Bor complex through its Serbian subsidiaries. Zijin has modernized and expanded production capabilities in the area, transforming Bor into one of Europe’s key copper hubs. With annual production reaching approximately 290,000 tonnes of copper and plans for further expansion, these new deposits are integrated into a continuous resource pipeline that enhances production stability.

The growing demand for copper globally, driven by advancements in technology and the energy transition, positions Serbia favorably in the international market. Copper is increasingly essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, power grids, and expanding tech manufacturing sectors. As the energy transition progresses, demand for copper is projected to rise steadily over the next decade.

One of the advantages of the Bor basin is its established infrastructure, which allows for rapid integration of new deposits into existing mining operations, processing facilities, smelting capacity, and export logistics. This integrated production model reduces capital costs and shortens development timelines compared to starting new greenfield projects, making new discoveries more economically viable.

Moreover, the geopolitical implications of this discovery cannot be overlooked. Although Serbia is not an EU member, it plays a crucial role in Europe’s industrial supply chains. The EU’s focus on securing access to critical raw materials like copper enhances the strategic importance of the Bor region in regional supply stability. Expanding resources in Bor contributes to Europe’s broader strategy to minimize dependency on less stable external sources.

However, as production expands, environmental and social considerations remain paramount. The Bor mining complex has faced scrutiny over its environmental impact, necessitating careful management of emissions, waste systems, water usage, and local community effects. Striking a balance between increased output and adherence to stricter environmental standards will be vital for sustainable growth.

Ultimately, while copper mining is a cornerstone of Serbia’s export economy—generating significant revenue and supporting thousands of jobs—the future growth of this sector will hinge on effectively integrating new resources within a sustainable and regulated industrial framework.
