Eurobattery Minerals is advancing its San Juan tungsten project in Galicia, marking a significant transition from preliminary development to a full execution phase. This shift involves aligning engineering, financing, and market integration efforts, underscored by the launch of a dedicated digital platform aimed at enhancing transparency and community engagement. A Key Source of Tungsten in Europe

Situated in A Gudiña, north-west Spain, the San Juan project is emerging as one of the few imminent sources of tungsten supply within the European Union. As policymakers and industry stakeholders strive to reduce dependence on imported raw materials, the project’s significance continues to grow. Tungsten, known for its high density and temperature resilience, is vital for various applications including cutting tools and aerospace alloys, yet Europe faces challenges due to its reliance on external sources, primarily China.

Efficient Development Model

The San Juan deposit is notable for its grade and accessibility, hosting around 60,000 tonnes of ore with an average grade of approximately 1.3% WO₃. This positions it as a high-grade resource capable of rapid development. Unlike larger mining projects that require substantial capital investment, San Juan is designed as a low-CAPEX operation with an initial investment estimated at €1.5 million to secure a majority stake and commence development. The project benefits from a long-term mining license valid until 2055, allowing it to bypass common permitting delays that often hinder European mining initiatives.

Engineering and Production Timeline

The project has engaged Minepro Solutions for process design and metallurgical validation, utilizing gravimetric concentration methods that align with environmental standards by minimizing chemical use. Initial plant capacity is projected at 10 tonnes per hour with options for modular expansion. The timeline for development is relatively swift; engineering and testing are expected to conclude within 20 weeks, paving the way for construction and commissioning. If all proceeds as planned, initial production could commence by late 2026 or early 2027.

Market Integration and Offtake Agreements

A key strength of the San Juan project lies in its early integration into established industrial supply chains. An offtake agreement with Wolfram Bergbau und Hütten, part of the Sandvik Group—one of Europe’s leading tungsten processors—ensures immediate market access and pricing visibility. This arrangement transforms San Juan from a speculative venture into a contract-backed industrial project with clearer revenue potential.

Alignment with EU Strategy

The project aligns with the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), which aims to enhance domestic extraction and processing of strategic resources. Eurobattery Minerals has sought Strategic Project designation for San Juan, which could facilitate expedited permitting processes and access to EU funding. As Europe transitions from policy formulation to implementation, projects demonstrating technical readiness and regulatory clarity will likely be prioritized.
