Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), a leading player in the global mining and metals industry, has announced a significant investment exceeding $1 billion in Kazakhstan for the year 2026. This commitment marks the largest single-year capital investment by ERG in Kazakhstan, underscoring the nation’s pivotal role in the company’s long-term strategic vision. The announcement was made by ERG’s CEO, Shukhrat Ibragimov, during a recent visit to the region, highlighting a shift in Kazakhstan’s mining landscape from raw material extraction to advanced industrial production.
Transforming the Metal Production Landscape
The upcoming investment initiative will enhance ERG’s mining and metallurgical operations across Kazakhstan, with an emphasis on boosting domestic processing capabilities and establishing new facilities dedicated to higher-margin industrial outputs. This strategic pivot aims to elevate Kazakhstan’s position within global markets by focusing on value-added metal production rather than merely exporting unprocessed materials.
A key project within this initiative is the planned construction of a hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant, expected to achieve an annual output of around 2 million tonnes. HBI serves as a crucial feedstock for modern steelmaking processes, which are increasingly aligned with hydrogen-ready and lower-emission production methods. This positions Kazakhstan to engage more actively with global sustainability trends.
Additionally, ERG intends to develop an iron ore pelletizing plant, which will enhance feedstock quality for metallurgical consumers, thus improving furnace efficiency and reducing emissions—further aligning with global modernization efforts in steel production.
Infrastructure and Capacity Enhancements
Beyond iron production projects, ERG’s investment strategy encompasses infrastructure upgrades and capacity enhancements across various strategic assets. At the Aktobe Ferroalloys Plant, plans include the establishment of an 80 MW gas-utilization power station that will harness industrial gases for electricity generation. This initiative is designed to lower operational costs while enhancing environmental performance.
Modernization efforts at the Aksu Power Station will also be pivotal in ensuring reliable energy supply for ferroalloy and alumina production—areas where energy efficiency is critical for maintaining competitiveness. Furthermore, at the Pavlodar Alumina Plant, ERG will boost processing capabilities through new vertical calcination kilns and improved filtration systems.
Notably, ERG is also venturing into gallium production, targeting an output of up to 15 tonnes annually. Gallium is increasingly recognized as a critical material for high-performance electronics and semiconductors, making it essential for meeting rising global demand in digital infrastructure.
Enhancing Global Market Position
ERG’s ongoing operations already play a significant role in Kazakhstan’s mining sector, particularly in ferroalloys, chromium, alumina, and iron ore—key commodities integral to global manufacturing supply chains. While gold, copper, and silver are not primary focuses for ERG, their investments bolster the broader ecosystem of industrial metals production that supports infrastructure development worldwide.
This investment strategy reflects a deliberate move towards enhancing economic returns by shifting from bulk commodity exports to producing advanced intermediate materials. Such a transformation is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan’s position in international trade while capturing greater value from its rich mineral resources.
Long-Term Commitment to Growth
The announcement of this substantial capital program builds upon a trend of increasing investments by ERG in Kazakhstan. In 2025 alone, investments were nearing $1 billion as part of ongoing modernization efforts aimed at enhancing efficiency and expanding production capabilities. The continuation of this investment trajectory into 2026 signals strong confidence in Kazakhstan’s regulatory environment and its strategic importance as a supplier to both European and global markets.
This sustained capital growth not only promises to bolster domestic employment but also strengthens industrial supply chains while fostering technological advancements across related sectors.
A Shift Towards Advanced Industrial Production
By investing over $1 billion into advanced production facilities, ERG is actively reshaping Kazakhstan’s industrial profile. The focus on HBI production, pelletizing technologies, energy modernization initiatives, and critical minerals like gallium reflects a broader global trend where resource-rich nations seek to retain more value domestically.
This shift reduces dependence on simple commodity exports while enhancing export revenues through higher-margin products. It also aligns Kazakhstan with international decarbonization efforts and industrial modernization initiatives.
If successfully implemented, ERG’s ambitious investment program could represent a transformative moment for Kazakhstan’s mining sector—enhancing its competitiveness in the global metals market while reinforcing supply chain resilience and accelerating its transition towards advanced industrial production.
