Doropo Gold Project Enhances Côte d’Ivoire’s Position in West Africa’s Mining Landscape

Resolute Mining’s initiative to advance the Doropo gold project in northern Côte d’Ivoire underscores the nation’s rising profile as a prime destination for substantial gold investments in West Africa. With an anticipated capital expenditure of approximately USD 170–190 million, Doropo is positioned as a high-conviction, single-asset investment, particularly at a time when mining capital is becoming more selective and risk-aware.

The project is designed as a conventional open-pit operation with a projected lifespan exceeding ten years. Initial production is expected to average around 200,000 ounces of gold annually, supported by resource estimates that indicate cumulative output exceeding two million ounces. Based on conservative long-term gold price projections of USD 1,850–2,000 per ounce, Doropo could generate gross revenues exceeding USD 3.5–4.0 billion throughout its operational life, highlighting the asset’s significant potential.

Strategic Financial Approach and Cost Management

Resolute Mining’s financing strategy for Doropo reflects a careful approach to risk management. The funding plan includes a mix of internal cash flow, project-level debt, and potentially limited equity participation from strategic partners. Ongoing discussions with lenders focus on securing senior secured facilities in the range of USD 100–120 million, complemented by sponsor equity. Côte d’Ivoire’s improving sovereign risk profile enhances expectations for favorable financing terms compared to other West African nations.

Critical to Doropo’s investment appeal are the anticipated operating costs. The all-in sustaining costs are projected to fall between USD 900–1,000 per ounce, benefiting from favorable strip ratios and robust metallurgical performance alongside existing infrastructure access. The power supply strategy will integrate grid electricity with on-site generation capabilities and options for renewable energy solutions, ensuring the project remains cash-positive even under lower gold price scenarios.

Côte d’Ivoire’s mining policy framework has significantly influenced its attractiveness for long-term investment. Over the last decade, regulatory clarity has improved, security conditions have strengthened, and institutional capacities within mining administration have expanded. Competitive royalty rates and fiscal stability provisions further mitigate development risks and expedite timelines from feasibility to production, thereby reducing political risk premiums for investors.

The Doropo project illustrates a broader trend of capital reallocation within the West African gold sector. As higher-risk jurisdictions experience increased scrutiny and operational challenges, investment is shifting towards perceived safe-haven countries like Côte d’Ivoire. This shift is attracting both greenfield exploration and brownfield expansion projects that solidify Côte d’Ivoire’s status as a key player in gold production.

Strategically, Doropo aligns with Resolute Mining’s goal to diversify its asset portfolio towards regions that can provide stable, long-term cash flows. While maintaining exposure to higher-risk areas, the inclusion of a long-life asset in Côte d’Ivoire enhances portfolio resilience and bolsters confidence among lenders and investors—an increasingly critical consideration as financial backers apply stricter environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria.

Overall, Doropo exemplifies the current dynamics of Africa’s gold cycle. Projects that offer scale, manageable capital requirements, supportive host governments, and credible sponsors continue to attract investment even as less viable assets struggle to secure funding. Côte d’Ivoire’s capacity to support such developments is reshaping investor perceptions of West Africa, creating a distinct divide between jurisdictions that effectively attract sustained mining investment and those facing enduring financing challenges.
