Rather than imposing uniform duties, the US implemented targeted tariffs across various stages of the copper value chain. Semi-finished products faced substantial levies—reaching up to 50%—while raw materials like concentrates from key partners such as Chile and Canada remained largely exempt. This selective approach has led to increased costs for construction firms needing copper piping and HVAC systems, while automakers and electronics manufacturers also grapple with rising expenses.

Global Copper Flows in Flux

The anticipation of expanded tariffs on refined copper imports has prompted traders and smelters to adjust their strategies significantly. As US copper futures traded at a premium compared to global benchmarks, there was a notable shift in physical supply towards US markets. This arbitrage opportunity has resulted in declining inventories in Asian storage facilities while bolstering stockpiles within the US.

Domestic mines produce more copper than local smelters can process, necessitating that large volumes be sent abroad for refining before returning as finished products. New regulations mandating a higher percentage of domestically mined copper be sold within the US have exacerbated this imbalance without addressing the underlying processing bottlenecks.

The Critical Role of Sulphuric Acid Supply

Beyond tariffs and logistical challenges, another critical constraint is emerging: sulphuric acid. Essential for solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) processes that allow for refined copper production without traditional smelting, sulphuric acid supply disruptions are now influencing production forecasts significantly. In Chile, which relies heavily on sulphuric acid imports—one-third of which previously came from China—the cessation of these shipments has raised concerns about future copper output levels.

This situation poses a risk not only for Chile but also for regions like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where copper production hinges on sulphur transported through Middle Eastern routes. Any disruption in these shipping lanes could severely impact acid production, potentially reducing annual copper output by over 100,000 tonnes.

The Economics of Smelting Under Pressure
