Clearwater Project: A New Era for Lithium Carbonate Production in North America

The Clearwater Project in Alberta is poised to reshape the lithium carbonate landscape as the global battery market undergoes significant transformation. With a shift from nickel-heavy cathode formulations to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and lithium manganese-rich (LMR) technologies, the demand for lithium carbonate is surging. This transition places E3 Lithium’s Clearwater development at a strategic advantage, highlighting the project’s potential to meet the evolving needs of battery manufacturers.

North America is currently grappling with a substantial lithium supply gap, primarily due to its heavy reliance on imported lithium chemicals. This dependency not only exposes the region to geopolitical risks but also presents challenges related to currency fluctuations and logistical inefficiencies. Establishing a robust domestic lithium supply chain has thus become essential for ensuring energy security and fostering local industry growth.

To mitigate these vulnerabilities, the Clearwater project taps into the Leduc aquifer, leveraging extensive geological data from Alberta’s oil and gas sector. The Bashaw District, central to the Clearwater project, boasts an estimated 16.2 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) in measured and indicated resources. This substantial resource base could support an annual production capacity of up to 150,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate for 50 years, establishing a long-term foundation for regional supply chains and addressing North America’s localization goals for battery materials.

Clearwater’s competitive advantage is further enhanced by its use of direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology. Unlike traditional methods that rely on evaporation ponds, DLE allows for rapid extraction of lithium from brine, significantly reducing production time and environmental impact. This method is particularly advantageous in Alberta’s cold climate, where evaporation techniques are impractical.

In 2025, E3 Lithium achieved a critical milestone with the commissioning of its Phase 1 Demonstration Facility, successfully producing battery-grade lithium carbonate. This operational capability not only validates the project’s feasibility but also positions E3 to build early commercial relationships with potential customers and partners ahead of full-scale production.

Beyond Clearwater, E3 Lithium’s asset portfolio includes the Garrington District, which contains an additional 5 million tonnes of LCE. The company is exploring options for joint ventures or asset sales in Garrington, aiming to unlock capital while maintaining a disciplined financial strategy.

A pivotal decision in Clearwater’s development is the potential exclusion of lithium hydroxide conversion from its initial phase. This aligns with industry trends favoring LFP batteries that utilize lithium carbonate due to their cost-effectiveness and enhanced safety features. By concentrating on lithium carbonate production, E3 is strategically positioned within the fastest-growing segments of the battery market.

Furthermore, E3 aims to integrate deeper into the battery value chain by addressing North America’s insufficient cathode manufacturing capacity. Collaborating with downstream partners could facilitate the establishment of a more comprehensive domestic ecosystem, enhancing supply security and regional competitiveness.

The economic implications of the Clearwater project are significant, with an anticipated creation of around 200 permanent skilled jobs and broader contributions to local economic activity through infrastructure development and supply chain investments. By capitalizing on Alberta’s existing energy expertise, particularly in reservoir management and fluid processing, Clearwater represents a vital step toward securing North America’s independence in battery materials.
