Cinovec Lithium-Tin Project Advances Into Permitting Phase in Czech Republic

The Cinovec lithium-tin project in the Czech Republic has entered a regulatory phase following completion of its definitive feasibility study, marking a transition from technical study work into permitting and approvals for one of Europe’s key hard-rock lithium developments.

European Metals Holdings reported that the definitive feasibility study (DFS) has been completed and that the Czech government has confirmed grant support of up to €360 million for the project. The company also confirmed that the environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been formally submitted to the Czech Ministry of Environment, completing a two-stage EIA submission process.

Production scale and long-life output profile

The DFS outlines a project design with a mine life exceeding 26 years and planned steady-state production of 37,500 tonnes per year of battery-grade lithium carbonate.

According to European Metals Holdings, this output level is equivalent to approximately 5.2% of projected European Union lithium demand in 2030. The company also estimates that production could support the manufacture of more than 900,000 electric vehicles per year, assuming a 50 kWh battery configuration.

Ownership structure and EU strategic designation

The Cinovec project is developed through Geomet, a joint venture owned 49% by European Metals Holdings and 51% by CEZ through SDAS, establishing a direct link to Czech industrial and utility interests.

The project has also been designated as a strategic asset under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, alongside classification as a strategic deposit by the Czech government. These designations place the project within both national and European policy frameworks supporting critical mineral supply development.

Land-use approvals and regional planning progress

Regulatory advancement includes regional rezoning approval granted by the Ústí nad Labem Regional Assembly, which defines project boundaries, development corridors, and associated utility infrastructure requirements. The rezoning process establishes land-use conditions for mine development and supporting infrastructure, forming a key component of the permitting pathway toward potential construction readiness.

Transition from feasibility study to permitting execution

With the DFS completed and environmental documentation submitted, the project has moved into its primary regulatory phase, where approvals, land-use decisions, and permitting conditions become central to advancement.

The submission of the EIA to the Czech Ministry of Environment completes the formal initiation of the environmental review process required for project development under national regulatory procedures.

Strategic positioning and development pathway

The Cinovec project’s investment structure combines a large-scale lithium resource with proximity to European industrial markets and integration with a domestic utility partner through CEZ.

The development remains focused on converting its feasibility-stage framework and strategic designation into secured permits, financing arrangements, and a construction decision, with regulatory timelines and project execution steps now forming the core development focus.
