China Invests RMB 2 Billion to Enhance Vanadium Flow Battery Production and Secure Energy Storage Supply

In a significant move to bolster its energy storage capabilities, China has announced a RMB 2 billion investment aimed at establishing a comprehensive manufacturing base for vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). This initiative, led by China Energy Storage Technology Development Limited and Zhejiang Furui Juneng Technology Co., Ltd., is expected to yield an annual production capacity of 2 GW in flow battery systems. The investment highlights China’s commitment to enhancing domestic supply chain autonomy while reducing costs associated with energy storage technologies.

Comprehensive Manufacturing Approach for Enhanced Efficiency

The new facility will encompass the entire VFB production process, including the manufacturing of vanadium electrolytes, bipolar plates, membrane electrode assemblies, battery stacks, and complete energy storage systems. By integrating these components under one roof, the project aims to achieve a cost reduction of 15–20% through economies of scale and improved operational efficiencies. This strategic integration not only enhances production efficiency but also strengthens China’s control over critical components within its domestic market.

Projected revenues from the facility are estimated at approximately RMB 6 billion annually, with a net profit forecast of RMB 600 million. These figures were shared during stakeholder presentations in Hong Kong, indicating strong financial expectations from this venture.

The timing of this investment aligns with the rapid adoption of long-duration storage technologies across China. Noteworthy projects include large-scale VFB installations, such as a 200 MW / 1,000 MWh project in Xinjiang, which is integrated with a 1 GW solar photovoltaic plant. Such developments underscore the growing importance of VFB systems in managing renewable energy intermittency and stabilizing power grids.

Strategic Focus on Domestic Energy Storage Supply Chains

This initiative reflects China’s broader strategy to fortify its domestic energy storage supply chains. Officials from China Energy Storage Technology Development have articulated plans to establish up to 100 full-industry-chain VFB production bases nationwide within the next five years. This expansion aims to enhance grid-scale storage capacity and support national decarbonization goals.

Vanadium flow batteries are recognized for their safety, long cycle life, and ability to provide extended discharge durations, making them particularly advantageous for utility-scale energy storage applications where traditional lithium-ion batteries may fall short.

The establishment of this new VFB manufacturing base marks a pivotal moment for China’s energy storage sector. By increasing production capabilities and integrating the value chain, this investment positions China as a formidable player in the global market for long-duration energy storage solutions and next-generation grid technologies.
