Çataltepe Mining Project Introduces Turkey’s First Digital Product Passport for Critical Minerals

In a significant advancement for the mining industry in Turkey, the Çataltepe Polymetallic Mine has launched the country’s inaugural Digital Product Passport (DPP). This initiative, developed through a collaboration between Minespider, a leading traceability platform, and TETHYS Trans-Eurasian Gateway, aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the supply chains of critical minerals within the region.

Located in Lapseki, Çanakkale, the Çataltepe project is now recognized as a benchmark for digital mining transparency. The DPP system, piloted since May 2025, is designed to capture and verify essential data throughout the lifecycle of mining operations—from extraction to processing and eventual export. This system will integrate various components of the operation, including the Çataltepe Mine itself and the YENICE Flotation Plant.

The traceability framework will provide comprehensive visibility over key mineral concentrates such as lead, zinc, and copper. With an impressive monthly processing capacity of approximately 15,000 tonnes of ore, the mine is expected to yield between 1,000 to 1,200 tonnes of refined concentrate. This level of integration is crucial for meeting the increasing demand for transparency in mineral sourcing.

Digital Product Passports serve as dynamic records that compile verified information throughout a product’s lifecycle. The implementation at Çataltepe enhances several critical aspects: it bolsters supply chain transparency, improves operational efficiency and reporting capabilities, fosters trust with downstream customers, and ensures compliance with international regulations such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA).

This initiative establishes a clear and auditable chain of custody that is increasingly necessary for global markets that prioritize sustainable sourcing. By embedding accountability throughout the value chain, Digital Product Passports are becoming essential tools for responsible mining practices and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) compliance.

Leyla Keser, Chairperson of TETHYS, emphasized that the DPP instills measurable accountability at the source of critical minerals. She noted that this technological advancement aligns Turkey and its neighboring regions with global standards while reinforcing responsible sourcing practices. This positions them as reliable partners in the international critical minerals supply chain.
