Guardian Metal Resources is working to establish a forensic system capable of verifying the geographical origin of tungsten from its Pilot Mountain and Tempiute projects in Nevada, ahead of tighter U.S. sourcing requirements for strategic minerals used by the defence industry. The London-listed company has entered an agreement with provenance specialist Oritain Global to develop forensic origin fingerprints for material from the two projects.
Guardian will supply samples from Pilot Mountain and Tempiute to create reference data that can later be used to assess whether tungsten entering the downstream supply chain originated from the company’s Nevada projects.
Forensic origin database for tungsten
The programme is intended to establish a dedicated forensic-origin database for tungsten, adding a physical verification method to conventional supply-chain documentation. Mineral producers and processors typically establish provenance through certificates, transportation records, contracts, invoices and other documents. Forensic testing instead examines natural characteristics within physical material and compares them with samples from an identified geological source.
Such testing can provide an additional means of verifying mineral origin where material passes through multiple stages of processing and trading. The approach could become relevant to strategic-mineral supply chains where governments and buyers require greater assurance that materials have not originated in restricted jurisdictions or been substituted during processing or commercial transactions.
U.S. defence sourcing rules drive traceability work
Guardian’s initiative precedes tighter U.S. defence-procurement sourcing requirements expected, which will further restrict tungsten supplied from countries regarded as strategic competitors. Tungsten is used across defence, aerospace, electronics, machine tooling and other industrial applications, with its hardness, density and extremely high melting point supporting these applications.
China remains dominant across a substantial part of the global tungsten supply chain, while the United States and Europe are seeking additional mining and processing capacity from alternative sources. Guardian is developing its Nevada projects within this supply diversification context. Pilot Mountain contains tungsten together with other metals, while the historically producing Tempiute district represents another potential domestic U.S. source.
Traceability incorporated into project development
Neither project is currently a major commercial tungsten supplier. Guardian is therefore developing its provenance controls during the project-development phase rather than introducing them only after production starts. The system could be used in future offtake agreements with defence contractors, government-linked purchasers and industrial customers whose procurement requirements include evidence of material origin.
Its commercial application will depend on whether buyers and regulators accept forensic testing as an additional provenance assurance alongside documentary traceability. The technology could also be relevant when tungsten passes through several processors, traders and manufacturers before reaching a finished product, creating increasingly complex documentary supply chains.
An independently verifiable geological fingerprint could provide an additional test of whether physical tungsten corresponds with the origin declared in accompanying documentation. For Guardian’s Nevada projects, the traceability programme is being developed alongside the potential future mining and processing of tungsten at Pilot Mountain and Tempiute, with verified provenance potentially becoming an identifiable characteristic of material produced from the projects.
