Finnish electrochemical recovery company Elmery has been selected for the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator programme, receiving €2.5 million in non-repayable grant funding and access to up to €5 million in equity investment to advance its pulse-based metal recovery technology.
The funding supports Elmery’s move from industrial validation toward broader deployment of a technology designed to recover metals and remove impurities from complex liquid industrial streams. The award places the company within the European Union’s efforts to strengthen supply chains for critical, base and precious metals through recycling and advanced processing technologies.
Elmery was selected under the EIC Accelerator’s Boosting European Critical Raw Material Chain call, which targets technologies supporting the EU’s strategy to reduce exposure in supply chains for metals used in batteries, electronics, defence systems, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing. In the latest EIC Accelerator round, 38 start-ups and SMEs were selected from 87 companies that reached the interview stage. The selected group received backing through €90 million in proposed grant funding, with an additional €202 million allocated for potential equity investments.
Electrochemical Recovery Targets Complex Industrial Streams
Elmery’s technology is based on a pulse-driven hydrometallurgical process designed to recover specific metals or remove unwanted impurities from industrial liquid streams. The approach focuses on a segment of the circular metals sector involving technically challenging feedstocks that are often chemically variable and difficult to monetise. Rather than relying only on conventional recycling routes, the technology targets recovery opportunities within industrial side streams.
The company’s process is aimed at improving metal recovery from materials already present within European industrial systems, supporting the processing and recycling components of the EU’s critical raw materials strategy.
The European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act has established 2030 targets requiring the bloc to achieve 10% of annual consumption from domestic extraction, 40% from processing and 25% from recycling. The legislation also seeks to limit reliance on any single third country to no more than 65% of supply for each strategic raw material.
EU Critical Materials Policy Expands Beyond Primary Mining
Elmery’s funding comes as European policymakers increasingly focus on processing capacity and secondary sources of raw materials alongside traditional mining development. The EU’s critical minerals strategy includes efforts to reduce dependence on external suppliers by increasing domestic extraction, processing and recycling capabilities. New mining projects often require lengthy permitting procedures, significant capital investment and extensive development timelines.
Metal recovery technologies provide another route by targeting industrial residues, refinery streams, mining waste, battery materials, electronics waste, process liquors and other secondary sources.
The company’s technology addresses the challenge of recovering valuable metals from streams where the presence of material alone does not guarantee economic viability. Recovery systems must achieve suitable costs, purity levels, yields and environmental performance to meet industrial requirements.
Industrial Deployment Becomes Key Test for Recovery Technologies
The EIC Accelerator support provides Elmery with resources for pilot development, engineering work and industrial validation. The programme is designed for technologies that may remain too advanced or risky for traditional private financing but have the potential to create new markets or transform existing industrial processes.
For critical metal recovery companies, industrial validation is particularly important because customers often require evidence of reliable performance before committing feedstock supply, offtake agreements or long-term partnerships. Elmery’s technology is positioned within a broader shift from general recycling concepts toward engineered recovery systems based on process control, traceability, energy efficiency and improved management of complex feedstocks.
