Eurobattery Minerals Initiates Engineering Phase for San Juan Tungsten Project in Spain

Eurobattery Minerals has embarked on the engineering phase of its San Juan tungsten project located in Galicia, Spain, marking a pivotal transition from exploration to imminent production. This phase is crucial as it lays the groundwork for the development of mining and processing facilities essential for the commercial extraction of tungsten, a vital raw material that supports high-performance industrial technologies across Europe.

The San Juan project is situated near A Gudiña in Ourense province, an area with a rich mining history and confirmed tungsten mineralization. Geological assessments have established proven ore reserves of around 60,000 tonnes, with an average grade of approximately 1.3 percent tungsten trioxide (WO₃). These promising grades are considered strong for European deposits, facilitating the project’s advancement toward production.

Engineering Focus on Mine Design and Processing

The newly commenced engineering phase will concentrate on finalizing the technical design for an open-pit mine and its associated processing infrastructure. A key element of this initiative will be a pilot concentration plant aimed at processing tungsten-bearing ore sourced from the site. The processing strategy will predominantly utilize gravimetric separation technology, which relies on density differences to segregate tungsten minerals. This method not only minimizes the use of chemical reagents but also reduces environmental impact compared to conventional mining techniques.

By emphasizing gravity-based processing, Eurobattery Minerals aims to align with stringent European environmental regulations while mitigating ecological footprints associated with mineral extraction.

Investment and Ownership Structure

Eurobattery Minerals has strategically invested in the San Juan project through an agreement with Tungsten San Juan S.L., the local project owner. The company has committed €1.5 million in staged investments to secure a 51 percent ownership stake. This investment structure allows for gradual funding while enabling Eurobattery to maintain operational control as it progresses through engineering, construction, and commissioning phases towards commercial production.

If development proceeds as anticipated, initial tungsten deliveries could commence in late 2026, representing a significant shift for Eurobattery from a pure exploration entity to one engaged in both exploration and production.

Commercial Viability Supported by Offtake Agreement

A letter of intent for an offtake agreement with Wolfram Bergbau und Hütten AG, part of the Sandvik Group, bolsters the project’s commercial viability. This agreement would secure a direct supply channel for tungsten concentrate from the San Juan mine, ensuring integration into a traceable European supply chain for strategic raw materials. Such arrangements are crucial for financing mining projects as they assure investors of reliable market access for future production.

Regulatory Support Enhances Project Stability

Recent institutional backing has further solidified the San Juan project’s foundation. Authorities in Galicia have extended the mining license by 30 years, now valid until 2055. This extension provides long-term operational certainty and facilitates infrastructure development, plant construction, and mine planning while also enabling future exploration opportunities that could expand resource availability beyond current reserves.

Leadership Enhancements to Drive Development

To bolster operational leadership, Eurobattery Minerals has appointed Agne Ahlenius, an experienced mining executive with over three decades in the industry. His prior experience includes significant contributions to developing Spain’s Barruecopardo tungsten mine, which positions him well to guide San Juan’s transition from planning to active operations.

Tungsten’s Role in European Industry

The advancement of the San Juan mine underscores Europe’s commitment to securing domestic supplies of critical raw materials. Tungsten is integral to various sectors including aerospace components, industrial tooling, electronics, and energy technologies due to its exceptional hardness and heat resistance. Recognized as a strategic mineral by the European Union, tungsten’s importance extends beyond industrial competitiveness to defense-related manufacturing.

Currently dominated by production in Asia, global tungsten supply poses vulnerabilities for European manufacturers. Therefore, new mining initiatives within Europe are gaining geopolitical and economic importance as they aim to enhance local supply chains.

Strengthening Europe’s Raw Materials Landscape

Eurobattery Minerals is positioning the San Juan project within a broader strategy focused on reinforcing Europe’s domestic raw materials supply chain. The company is cultivating a portfolio of mineral assets aimed at supporting industrial transformation and energy transition amidst rising demand for strategic materials.

By advancing the San Juan tungsten mine into production, Eurobattery seeks to contribute significantly to a more localized and resilient supply chain for critical minerals within the European Union while establishing a revenue-generating operation.

Aiming for One of Europe’s Few Active Tungsten Mines

The current engineering phase signifies a critical advancement in the project’s timeline. As detailed planning and technical design progress, the San Juan project is transitioning towards operational readiness necessary for commercial mining and mineral processing. Should construction proceed as scheduled, it could emerge as one of Europe’s few active tungsten mines by 2026, thereby enhancing Europe’s capacity to supply strategic metals essential for its industrial sectors amidst an increasingly competitive global resource landscape.
