The ROTATE project, funded by the European Union, has unveiled a series of seven technical handbooks aimed at bolstering environmental practices within the mining and quarrying sectors across Europe. This initiative, officially titled Circular Ecological Essential & Critical Raw Materials, is part of the Horizon Europe programme and is coordinated by the Spanish aggregates association ANEFA.
With a focus on aligning extractive operations with EU environmental legislation and the European Green Deal, the handbooks are designed to provide practical methodologies that address sustainability expectations in critical raw materials production. This effort underscores the growing importance of environmental performance in securing regulatory approvals and gaining public support for mining projects.
A Comprehensive Approach to Sustainable Mining
The release of these handbooks comes at a time when Europe is striving to secure essential raw materials for electrification and advanced manufacturing. The third handbook introduces Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies specifically tailored to mining operations, enabling companies to transparently report their environmental impacts through Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
