The Keliber lithium project in central Finland is nearing the final stages of its construction and commissioning, positioning itself as a leading battery-materials initiative within the European Union. Owned by Sibanye-Stillwater, this project integrates multiple hard-rock lithium deposits with a centralized chemical processing facility aimed at producing battery-grade lithium hydroxide, critical for the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) market in Europe.
Progress on the refinery and supporting infrastructure remains largely on track. With mechanical installations nearing completion, commissioning activities are set to ramp up through 2026. Upon reaching full operational capacity, Keliber is projected to generate approximately 15,000 tonnes per year of lithium hydroxide monohydrate, significantly contributing to Europe’s domestic EV battery needs. The mine’s current operational plan supports an initial lifespan of around 18 years, with potential for further resource expansion through ongoing exploration.
Keliber has been officially recognized as a strategic project under the EU’s Critical Raw Materials framework, granting it access to regulatory prioritization and public funding opportunities. This designation underscores a significant shift in European policy aimed at not only securing lithium supplies but also fostering domestic chemical processing capabilities to decrease reliance on Asian lithium refining and conversion processes.
From a financial perspective, total capital expenditures have risen compared to earlier feasibility assessments, attributed to inflationary pressures, heightened environmental compliance requirements, and an expanded scope of processing designed for long-term operational stability. Despite these increased costs, Sibanye-Stillwater asserts that the project’s long-term economic viability remains competitive in the global lithium market.
Environmental considerations are integral to Keliber’s development strategy. The project employs closed-loop water management systems and low-emission processing technologies while adhering to EU sustainability standards. Engagement with local municipalities, landowners, and regional stakeholders continues as the project transitions from construction to production, although local opposition has been notably less than that encountered by other lithium projects in southern Europe.
