Wärtsilä awarded contract for power plant supply at Senegal’s Boto gold mine

Wärtsilä, a global technology group, has secured a contract to supply engines and auxiliary equipment for a new power plant at the Boto gold mine in Senegal.

The contract includes the delivery of six Wärtsilä 32 engines and was awarded by Africa Power Services (APS), the primary engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the project. This agreement marks a significant milestone for the Boto mine, which was recently acquired by Managem, an international mining group with operations across eight African countries.

The 17MW power plant aims to enhance the mine’s energy infrastructure. Wärtsilä confirmed the order in the first quarter of 2024, with deliveries scheduled to be completed by December 2024. The commissioning of the power plant is expected in Q1 2025.

Sameer Poredi, Wärtsilä’s Energy Lifecycle business development manager, stated, “The configuration offers flexibility and optimal performance under varying load demands. Wärtsilä’s strong presence in Africa, particularly through our regional setup in Dakar, supports our customers throughout the lifecycle of their power plants.”

Romain Darracq, head of sales support at APS, emphasized the importance of the power plant, noting, “The mine is remote and not connected to the grid, making this facility crucial for its operations. We needed a partner capable of providing a reliable electricity supply, and Wärtsilä’s track record and equipment delivery times made them the best choice for this fast-track project.”
