Ma’aden and Aramco Expand Copper Exploration Across Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is expanding copper exploration through Ma’aden, Saudi Aramco and state-supported partnerships as the kingdom seeks to develop the Arabian Shield’s geological potential into a domestic source of industrial metal. The exploration strategy is linked to rising copper requirements from Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure and industrial development. New cities, electricity networks, renewable-energy facilities, electric transport, data centres and industrial plants all require conductors, cables and other electrical equipment.

Copper Exploration Supports Domestic Supply

Saudi Arabia remains substantially dependent on imported raw materials and manufactured copper products. Developing domestic mines could reduce that exposure while also creating an export industry connected to the country’s Red Sea and Gulf logistics infrastructure.

Ma’aden provides the established mining platform for the exploration effort, while Saudi Aramco brings capabilities developed through the petroleum sector, including subsurface imaging, drilling expertise, project management and capital capacity. The application of oil-industry technologies to mineral exploration could improve the identification of buried mineral deposits, combining subsurface expertise with Saudi Arabia’s broader mining-development programme.

Development Conditions for New Copper Districts

Any new copper discoveries would still need to demonstrate adequate scale and grade to support commercial development. Projects in Saudi Arabia’s desert environment would also require reliable solutions for water, electricity, transport and mineral processing. The quality of produced copper concentrate and applicable treatment charges would be important factors in determining the competitiveness of future output against established operations in Chile, Peru, Africa and Central Asia.

The exploration programme also has implications for European mining and metals companies. European smelters and manufacturers require diversified supplies of copper concentrate and refined metal, while European equipment suppliers can provide technologies including crushers, mills, flotation circuits, automation and underground mining systems.

Ma’aden trades on Tadawul under 1211, while Saudi Aramco trades under 2222. Potential indirect European exposure includes Finnish-listed Metso and Stockholm-listed Sandvik and Epiroc. The eventual revenue opportunity for equipment suppliers will depend on contract awards rather than exploration announcements. Moving Saudi copper projects from exploration into material production would take years. The programme brings mining into the long-term industrial strategies of Ma’aden and Saudi Aramco, with exploration and development activity continuing alongside conditions in conventional junior-mining equity markets.
