Mining automation is expanding beyond autonomous haulage into drilling, blasting and ground control, extending digital technologies across more stages of the production cycle. Sandvik launched its xCell Banshee and xCell Hydra systems in August for digital monitoring of rock bolts and underground ground conditions.
At Agnico Eagle’s LaRonde mine, Epiroc and its partners deployed automated drill-rod handling underground. The system reduces manual interaction with heavy drilling equipment. Orica is also advancing automation through its Surface Mining Automation Program, which includes automated explosive loading and tele-remote Mobile Manufacturing Units.
Automation Across the Production Chain
The technologies address different operational activities but contribute to a broader automated mining model. Drilling can be automated, blasting can increasingly be conducted remotely, and ground conditions can be monitored continuously. Loaders and haulage equipment can also operate with fewer workers in active production areas.
The effects extend beyond direct labour requirements. More precise drilling can improve blasting consistency, while improved fragmentation can support loading operations and reduce stress on crushing circuits. Digital ground-condition information can also feed into mine planning. Automation therefore connects multiple stages of production rather than being limited to individual machines.
Labour and Equipment Integration
Labour availability is supporting the adoption of these technologies. Remote mining operations can face difficulties recruiting and retaining specialist operators, while control centres can allow some positions to be relocated away from the mine site. The increasing use of automated equipment is also making interoperability a key issue. Mining companies commonly operate equipment from multiple manufacturers, requiring systems from Sandvik, Epiroc, Caterpillar and Komatsu, together with specialised technology suppliers, to exchange information with planning and fleet-management platforms.
This increases the importance of control software and open interfaces in connecting different parts of the mining operation. The expansion of automation is therefore extending beyond autonomous machinery toward the digital systems that connect and manage activities across the mine.
