Talga and GreenRoc Advance European Graphite Supply Chain Projects

European efforts to establish domestic graphite supply chains are advancing through two different development models: Talga Group’s Vittangi Anode Project in Sweden and GreenRoc Strategic Materials’ Amitsoq project in Greenland.

While battery supply discussions have often focused on lithium, graphite remains a key raw material for battery anodes and requires large-scale supply for electric vehicle and energy storage markets. The two projects are targeting different positions in the value chain, with Talga pursuing an integrated mine-to-anode strategy and GreenRoc combining graphite mining development with downstream anode material testing.

Talga advances integrated Swedish graphite project

Talga Group’s Vittangi Anode Project is centred on the Nunasvaara South graphite mining operation near Vittangi in northern Sweden. The project is designed to extract high-grade natural graphite and process the material into battery anode products at Talga’s planned refinery in Luleå.

The company expects the mine to produce an average of 100,000 tonnes of high-grade natural graphite per year. The concentrator is planned to operate throughout the year, while mining activities are designed for six months annually to reduce impacts on reindeer herding. The regulatory position for the Swedish project improved in January 2026, when Sweden formally adopted the detailed zoning plan for the Nunasvaara South graphite mine.

The approval enables Talga to advance detailed engineering design and apply for building permits ahead of project development. The company had already secured key mining approvals, including the environmental permit and exploitation concession.

Graphite production linked to European anode manufacturing

According to reporting by Reuters, the mine is expected to produce approximately 100,000 tonnes of graphite ore annually, which would be processed into around 20,000 tonnes of battery anode material. This production model connects upstream graphite extraction with downstream anode manufacturing within Europe, positioning the project around both mineral supply and battery-material processing.

GreenRoc develops Greenland graphite and anode material pathway

GreenRoc Strategic Materials is advancing the Amitsoq graphite project in Greenland, offering a different approach to European graphite supply development. The project is located outside the European Union, but Greenland has strategic importance for European and NATO raw-material supply considerations. GreenRoc reported that Amitsoq contains a JORC mineral resource of 23.05 million tonnes grading 20.41% graphite. The project has also received a 30-year exploitation licence from Greenland and has been designated as an EU Strategic Project.

Alongside mine development, GreenRoc is advancing downstream processing activities. The company’s active anode material pilot plant has processed approximately 700 kilograms of 95% graphite concentrate into spherical graphite through seven test runs.

Financing preparation and downstream development

GreenRoc is receiving advisory support from the European Investment Bank as it prepares for financing activities. The support covers financing readiness, technical-economic evaluation and financial modelling. The two projects represent different graphite development strategies. Talga’s Vittangi Anode Project combines Swedish graphite mining, planned refining capacity and European industrial infrastructure, while GreenRoc’s Amitsoq project combines a high-grade Greenland graphite resource with downstream anode material development. Both projects continue advancing through financing, offtake discussions, engineering activities and future construction planning required to move toward commercial production.
